The original premise of this thread is still in effect. I started this thread to inform people about the opportunities to work in the energy sector and avoid going OTR. Some may wish to go OTR and get a year's experience. In that case, if you do decide to give the energy patch a try you will have a lot more doors open to you. For those who are newbies coming out of CDL school, there are still companies looking to hire you. The demand for CDL drivers is great and you will still make a very decent wage with no experience. That said, you should be flexible on where you will live. I have heard if you have little to no experience, then right now you have a better chance of landing a driving job in West Texas vs South Texas Eagle Ford country. Not saying it will not happen for you in South Texas, just be prepared to search a little harder for that opportunity.

So, if you are a newbie and you are looking to tank crude, not sure what to tell you. Maybe look into Sunoco for that. There are other outfits down here that will hire you if you have a little experience. Gulf Mark is one to look at in that case. If you are a newbie and looking into just working in the energy patch, then Key has been mentioned on this thread as a company looking to hire. In our area of South Texas I have heard that Stallion will hire a newbie.

If you care to know, my situation is still the same. I'm working for Schneider hauling condensate in Victoria and have 6 months under my belt with no accidents or spills. I believe we have about 90 drivers hauling the crude oil (condensate) and hear we have a contract for the next year. It is going to be a while before they do any hiring on this account. Some of the drivers who did not fall below the 90 were offered other jobs within the company. Many were told if things opened back up here they could have first shot at coming back.

For the people who posted job ideas on this thread like Key and Nabors, I thank you. I have passed your info on to several drivers at our yard who had no choice but to look elsewhere for employment. There are also some drivers who have been told they could stay but have decided to move on as well. Some are worried the pay is going to get cut. I've heard we will no longer work 6 days on and 2 days off so that will cut down on our earning potential. None of the drivers on our account are exactly sure what will happen next as we get a lot of our info from rumors. For now it is just remain in a holding pattern and hope for the best!

I think the short answer is "no," but I was checking Houston craigslist jobs for a while, and I saw a couple of smaller companies that had some things open, so if you can dig into the classified ads around the city you might be able to dig something up out in the suburbs.

please spare me the cl stuff as I have had multiple major busts on what should have been wiped off by internal controls at C.L. there are 39 listings for Trans/Vac Truck Driver at Key Energy Services Field Operations alone ~ many Posted 8 hours ago ..... Weatherford is stuffed with needing people and Chalk Mountian ... Stevens has a large lot between Kenedy & Stockdale on Texas 123 with I could not count them all trucks branded Stevens just sitting there though I am sure they are waiting on the 1-3 year DOT Regulated .....

and for those of you who only work one or two job-leads, try Houston for your O&G job search as there has to be a thousand companies there doing O&G and any that are running trucks in EFS will say so on their website ...... Frac Tech Services, Equity Drive, Houston, TX being an ideal example :biggrin_2557:

Wow, I've been looking over some threads. Seems like a lot of people are saying things in the ND oil patch are slow and it is hard to get a job. Also read one guy state he came down from ND to TX and could not find work in the oil patch and went back to ND. Not sure if someone is playing mind games or what but I find all this hard to believe.

Many of the drivers who were forced to leave the account I am on found work if they were looking. Some stayed with Schneider and went OTR but I know a lot of drivers who moved to other companies in the oil field services.

As for tanker drivers, there have been a few pipelines in the area come online which cut into the work load for some, but with over 270 drilling rigs in operation right now in the Eagle Ford, jobs running to wells sites seem to be picking up for some tanker companies. I would be interested to hear from others if they have seen a pick up or decline in the demand for drivers in their neck of the oil patch.

Is there any companies in the Eagle Ford fields that offer houesing with the driver jobs and that work like 3 to 4 weeks on with 1 week off. Ive been on forums all year long and have a real good idea how ND has been going. but dont see a lot of same offers in eagle ford. ive seen Odessa/Midland offer time off at 1 week with housing but if i come all the way down there I preffer South. I just dont care to work ND in the winter with days that can go 30 to 40 below and averages in the dead of winter at single digits in the day time. I cant imagine what water and water on your hoses would be like at those temps. Water + 0 Degrees = Popsicle hoses I would think. Maybe the guys from ND just didnt want a 5 to 10 dollar an hour pay cut for doing the same thing. I on the other hand will take it for creature comforts.

Does everyone have there own apts in south TX. ? :biggrin_25523: I dout it :biggrin_2552: But where are most drivers in south Texas staying? Being a over the road driver i took a shine to texas several years ago and plan on finding some inexpensive place close to the coast if only for the winters, First choice was Galveston but just about moved there on the beach the year it got wiped out by the Hurricane . 2008 Now would like to see what the southwest corner has to offer. though it would be near the coast not the oil field. MN winters r starting to get to me after 20 years need a change back toward the 30 years born and raised So Cal. But Cali has gone to Hell in a handbag as far as im concerned. Just looking for a little help finding company that helps with housing when starting out down there. And one that offers a week off every month or so, so I can keep 20 year relationship stable with GF. Ive been passing out good advise all year to drivers going to ND from everywhere on a few other sites and on here PM mostly here. So could someone toss a Driver a Bone Thanks. Private Message is just fine:yes2557: Mums the Word. Thanks

There is at least one cabin for rent around 78022/78368 - Lake Corpus Christi, for less than $400 a month. Mine may be available as soon as I move my wife here and I will want to replace myself to avoid breaking my 6 month lease. You would need the same. Landlords are nice folks. There are six cabins, 5 are now taken.

As for work in the area? RockDoctor mentions the major ones that are hiring, but that's hardly all of them. Key, Gulfmark, Nabors all need drivers, as he said. There are many more, and smaller. Mo-Vac, Siboney, K3BMI, many others. Trouble is, if things slow down, the job maybe goes away. Important consideration.

Me, I'm working for Halliburton, flatbedding chemicals, 4wd forklift operating, and some winch work, because they hired me when I needed to get hired, like right now. It's a harder job than tanker. It has its rewards. I think they are still hiring Warehouse Drivers, Laredo, Cotulla, Victoria, maybe even Beeville, but they pay less, and it's the long hours that make the checks in the 1000+ a week range. Not great, not bad. Decent place to start, no oilfield, or much CDL experience needed. Not really easy to get hired by them though. Helps if you actually meet someone there and talk to them rather than putting in an on line application and waiting. Worked for me.

PS: Halliburton trucks are mostly dull oxidized red KWs and Macks, and pretty beat up. Trailers too. The ones they first tried to assign me wouldn't pass my inspection, let alone DOT. Now they all probably do. Took them seriously when they said don't drive unsafe equipment, and that they would fire you if you got ticketed for equipment problems.

Trimac in Dilley (office in San Antonio, talk to Mike Ortiz) has man camps and the schedule you're looking for, Jefferyz. So do others. The more remote the location, the more common are man camps. Not rare. In the towns (Beeville, Kenedy, Karnes City, George West, Three Rivers, Tilden, Goliad, Victoria, etc.), it's variously hard to find rentals, but not impossible. Certainly better than Midland and Odessa.

Rockdoctor, thanks so for all your advice you are a great help to people here. Well my husband hit South TX and it took him 2 days to get a job with apply at 3 places total. He was actually on his way to ND when in the town we lived in MN there is quite a few people who have worked in ND oilfield and they were there back in MN saying don't go right now it is slow, and they are having hiring freezes. So he went to TX.

He was gonna go to Midland/Odessa but since he had interview already in La Porte, he was closer and Midland seems in the middle of nowhere, LOL. But if nothing he was gonna head there. He applied at one place then another 2 the one that hired him, Basic Energy, was out of Kenedy and since he has no housing they are gonna send him to another yard closer to San Antonio(forgot name of town). He will get housing but is unsure if it will be temp or perm, I think is perm. His schedule is 4 days on 2 off with 14 hr shifts pay 17/hr. He has, after getting this since he has to wait for guy from other yard to get back from vacation, looking around and says a lot of companies are looking for experience. This will be good for us, being closer to cities I am looking into Austin as relocation. Part of me wanted him to go to Midland why I don't know, I like the idea of being somewhere it snows idk why.But this is fine it will compensate being closer to city areas, Midland is just far from everywhere.
