Here is a field trip for you.. get in your car and go to wal mart and price groceries for 2 meals a day as cheaply as you can.. Then find your closest flying j and TA/petro.. go get a menu at the above truckstops and look at them.. Try to get out under 12.. with a tip.. It is almost impossible.. a hamburger is $9 before drink and tip..
After this go to the Subway in the truckstop and look at the price of the non 5/5 footlongs... write um down.. Now go to the local subway store there is about .75 cents higher cost per sandwich at he t/s.. If you get into trucking you are now treated like Mitt Romney at the democratic convention.. You have to much money you don't deserve and they have better uses for it..
Here is what I mean I am an 0/0p I had to put a clutch in a truck in harrisburg pa a year or 2 back.. Kenworth in Dallas quoted me 1800 labor and parts.. and 24 hour turnaround.. if we could get the truck there.. Truck made it from New York to harrisburg with load on it.. (I wasn't driving said truck) Called KW in Harrisburg.. told me 1800 labor and parts. of course they weren't there until monday.. Then they get in there and low and behold this truck has a "special" cluth that is 2400 Plus labor of 4 hours.. so we are looking at 2900 out the door.. I called mechanic in Dallas (a friend) he said there is nothing special about that clutch except it is 1400 miles away and they have it tore down in there shop and are putting the screws to you..(yes we called ag in pa and never heard anything back) I told that to tell this.. truckstops are the same way they know you are a captive group you can't park at the local resturants without gettin in an accident or a ticket so there prices are 15 to 30% higher than the mom and pop cafe in town and the food is probably not as good.. Just get yourself a good plug in cooler and do some cookin and you will get out fairly cheap.. Don't fall into the buffet mentality.. You will be better for it..
How much do you spend per month?

Not including cigarettes I spend about 100 a month in groceries with a cooler and microwave. About once a week I'll eat at a buffet so that's another 40. I drink a lot of soda and don't have room for 2 liters so I spend another 60 a month on that and the occasional snack. I guess that puts me at around 200 a month.
To put it in perspective I spent a little over 400 bucks during my 1 month training period and that was with my trainer buying me dinner after every run.
USX has free laundry facilities at their terminals so I don't have to put out money for that. -
Thanks for this info - hubby & I are planning to ship out after Christmas...He's gonna drive solo & I'm gonna ride along. Am working on getting what we need for truck and packing up house now. The information here will help me to budget accordingly...

I budget 250 dollars a week that covers my cigs internet and eating, laundry with a few bucks left over that goes towards my next toy fund. I eat 1 -2 buffet a month and usually 1 meal every couple of days off the truck other wise, I'm eating on the truck it's cheaper. 4 years ago when I came back to trucking I weighed 326 lb (I'm 6'4 ) after 3 years of OTR driving I weighed 265 I been local for the last year weight is back to 310lb so after the November elections come January I'm going back out OTR It's the best weight loss program I have found. lol
