Former drivers know the truth: this little family-fun business uses nasty tactics. Ex drivers say if they don't like you, they starve you out--put you at the end of the line for hauls. Ex-drivers--and there are many-- know the real scoop. They say the "family" uses threats like blackballing you on DAC, and other forms of intimidation and harassment to retaliate against you if the "family" doesn't like you. Take some personal time, medical leave, etc. and watch your halls shrink...oh, and don't dare file a complaint or legitimate lawsuit, although there are so many out there. That's why they've split their company into I think 7 differently named businesses--they get sued so much, don't want the whole ship to sink. It's sad that all they think about is their fiefdom and don't feel for their own drivers and their families. Bunch of bullies!

Is that the one behind Hirschbach in East Dubuque, IA? What did you haul?

Yeah, right next to Hirschbach. It's a tiny business--probably cause drivers don't stay very long.
In industry, not driver at moment.
Are you employee driver or OO?

I use to drive for HML until I left the end of 2010. I noticed that business but never heard anything about it. You very rarely seen activity over there.

Yeh, there's a reason for that. Do you know anyone who ever worked there?
What is HML? Why'd you leave?

Sorry, easy way of writing Hirschbach Motor Lines.

I left because I lost my medical card to health reasons. I would of been a short timer anyways. They went downhill quick when the moved from S. Sioux City.

No I didn't know anyone from RT&T. A few times I seen the office people coming and going is about it.

Sorry to hear that you lost your job. What do you mean you lost your medical card to health reason? Did they take away your health coverage because you were ill? Did you get insurance thru HML as a company driver of were you a OO?

    "Family-run" =/= "ethically-run," or "non-dysfunctionally run."

You lot need to get rid of this "perceptual blind-spot:"

That a business being small/family-run implies that it's the nominal moral/ethical opposite of the huge steering-wheel-holder factory farms. It implies nothing of the sort, it simply says that the former is smaller than the latter.

Maybe it's different in Canada, but some of the worst experiences I've ever had in my working life have been at the smallest outfits, all run by families. As for family...IME, it gets you too close to their drama and personal ugliness, and this can even also affect your paycheque.

    Example:

The payroll chick at one company I worked at being a drunk, but she was "family" (after a fashion --ex-wife of the senior dispatcher, but they'd parted fairly amicably, mainly due to her addiction).

    Result:

    EVERY SINGLE CHEQUE
I ever got from these people was shorted, and I had to fight like Hell to get it fixed. Which it was, eventually, but only because the head of payroll/accounting was both sober and not related to the head clan. The head-clan, like most severely dysfunctional families, put all its efforts into maintaining the facade that "everything was normal" with them (that spinny, drunk ##### wasn't the only alky among them), company be ######...And sure enough, they closed their doors recently.

Also, IME "family-run" also means that, unless you are family/friend-of, then you will always be an outsider, and that any promotions, raises, perqs, boni, choice assignments of trucks/runs, etc., will always go to the ones the family favours, and have not a ###### thing to do with actual merit. Nepotism, in other words.

Again IME, there is a definite "two-tier merit structure" at family-run companies, and if you're not an automatic favourite sheerly by dint of being related/friends with them, then you will, no matter how good you do, always be racing for second place.

See clearly, my friends, and with absolute, ice-cold objectivity.

DAC has become just another tool for companies to get back at anyone that is not a company man and has the gall to speak up when the crap starts to reach their eyeballs...

Yeh, you're right; but if a bad DAC prevents you from getting another job in the industry,it's a real threat, right?
