i would say my trucking career had got off to a rocky start, i started with cfi, and was fired after 7 months due to motorist complaints. i was very content with my job there. i went to work for gainey transportation shortly after being fired from cfi. i bailed out from them after a week under good conditions....i was just completely unhappy with that company. they were polar opposite from cfi. i have taken off a few weeks now and i am set to go with ptl. i am now having cold feet wondering if i am making the right decision. the plus for them is:
-no newyork or northeast
-they have 3 border terminals down in texas....i like running to texas.
-rider policy for my girlfriend.
the bad side is that they run autoshift transmissions, i like shifting, and i am worried if i go to another company in a year, i won't be able to pass the road test because i forgot how to shift. and i worry about not getting enough miles with them as well.
would i be better off going to a dirtbag company like jb hunt or werner or swift? just so i can continue shifting? i don't have alot of options at this point considering i got termed from my first job. alot of companies wouldn't consider me because of that.
shoot me a few words of advice so i can alleviate my cold feet. thanks
got off on the wrong foot

To be brutally honest....find A job and stick with it. You've been driving for only 7 months and already fired from one, and left the other after only 1 week. That doesn't look good on any resume. Don't worry about the shifting thing right now, you need to show job stability. A good employer will never hire you if your a job bouncer. thats my 2 cents.

i am aware the next job i go with i need to show some job stability, i have superior stability before i got into trucking and like i said, i just got off on the wrong foot. i don't intend to be a job hopper. under advice from another recruiter, it is in my best intrest to stay with the next company for a while. my main concern is going to a company that has automatic transmissions, and its adverse effect on my future with the minimal amount of experience i have. i intend to go back to work for cfi, i am eligable for rehire after 6 months to 1 year. however i am afraid that i will forget how to shift properly to pass a road test.
thanks. -
Stability in a job goes along way when applying for another job....as far as forgetting how to shift..if you are a true trucker you NEVER forget...the road test is part of the skills...you either know it or you don't...no go betweens...I wish you luck with your job...

If you do decide to go with this company I wouldn't worry about the shifting later. It will come back to you. Just get in there and stick with it for a while. You will be ok. Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

with only 7 months exp. and two jobs already you might end up backing youurself into a corner , if you keep doing this jumping around thing ,then a job will be hard to find and you might just be stuck going to the likes of swift or jb.
