Will using the Jake while upshifting cause problems? I've been using it at highway speeds to keep off the brakes when traffic bunches up, but haven't had it on while climbing gears. I know I can easily get from 9th to 10th (EF 10 spd), but haven't tried it in slow traffic. Do I have to turn it on and off as needed, or can I just leave it on? My trainer's answer was a little vague, and I was too tired to press him for specifics at the time, but he keeps it on almost all of the time. I'm new, and am trying to build good habits from the beginning. Am driving a 2011 Cascadia (if it matters). Thanks in advance!
Accelerating with the Jake on?

I'm no vet, but I believe most jakes are canceled when accelerator and or clutch is pushed and they resume their duties when you stop touchin stuff.

it shouldnt cause a problem but you had better to be able to shift real quick as it will drop the rpms fast. On my older truck you could leave the jake on and if you rested your foot on the clutch it would not allow it to engage until you lifted your foot up.
shivver Thanks this. -
It'll cause the RPMs to drop too quickly when you let off the power.
If you learn to do it without letting the pedal top out all the way, it won't activate the jake.
On some trucks, the jake won't activate if the shifter is in neutral, so if you float a shift correctly, it won't activate it. -

To learn with...do it with it off. I've seen experienced drivers fight shifting with jakes on in Cascadias but I always left them on and learned that way. Drove 13 speed 04 FrtLnr as well...same way. Just whatever your preference is.

My trainer taught me that way two years ago and still drive that way teaches you to shift faster. I'm in a pete 587 13sp. I see traffic I can go from 60 to stopped traffic to rolling at idle speed without ever touching the brakes. The goal is to stay rolling. Don't wanna just hit the brakes when you come up to traffic. Keep them wheels rolling and just jake it.

if you are just starting out leave them off especially when loaded and on hills the sudden jerking around has the potential to rip drive line components right out of there respective holes practice when ur empty in the higher gears to get used to it and over time make your way down eventually u'll be able to jake shift with the best of them i got an 18spd and i jake shift from low all the way to 18th empty or loaded with 100klbs gross on...it just takes practice and feel. also dont do it at truck stop parking lots at night...people seem to frown on that when u got straight pipes haha dont ask how i know lol
halfburn Thanks this. -
if you are new keep it simple, only use your jake on a down grade. that way people wont laugh at you in the parking lot, when you forget to turn it off. jon
