I made it home Monday night but with a slight change in plans.

The load I picked up in VA was used auto engines from a salvage yard destined for a tear-down facility in Houston. The engines were put into large cardboard bins lined with plastic. The problem was the sharp edges of the engine parts rubbed thru the linning and container allowing oil to spill onto the trailer floor. The receiver used kitty litter and tried to soak it up but that only got what was on the surface, and a washout would not have removed what had soaked into the wood.

Since I already knew the next load was going to H.E.B. Grocery in San Antonio I called backhaul dispatch and told them situation. Was told to call broker and see if the customer would load the trailer. (Which I had already suspected they would not if it was a food grade shipment). I called broker and gave them the same info. They in-turn called the shipper. Took a total of 20 mins to get the answer. Shipper would not load the trailer, and the load was canceled. Now I'm stuck without a load home at 1200 on Christmas Eve.

All was not lost, as during my initial conversation with backhaul I suggested that if load did cancel I was willing to take a load from Pol-Tex (our facility on the eastside of Houston) to Henderson,NV (our facility there) since it would require me to pass thru SA enroute. Was told that sounded like a good option but to call the broker first. Once it was confirmed the load cenceled I called backhaul with the news. Was told to give them the opportunity to find another load while they checked to see if Pol-Tex had an available Henderson transfer. At 1440 I got the call to pick up at Pol-Tex going to Henderson with a delivery time of "whenever you want to deliver it".

The nice thing about this change was that I didn't have to break up my home time to make that Wednesday delivery to H.E.B..

I'll be in Henderson by Monday morning.

You need more than experience. With all the applicants they get, they are only choosing those with clean MVRs, good CSA scores. From what I've heard the work history is something they are willing to work with because they sympathize with drivers trying to find a good emplyeer only to be sold a bait and switch. Plus, if they have a hard time verifying your work history you wont get a call back.

Hope this helps all to understand a little of the hiring process and why you may not get a reply.

I have noticed to hesitation you mentioned. Usually occurs after a long drive & the engine has cooled a bit. So I'm thinking a warmup period may be necessary after an extended shut down. Other than that it is doing good. After I deliver in Henderson I'll be going to Sumner,WA. Thatshould give it a good workout.

Got a call from outbound dispatch last night about 1730 with load offers for Monday leaving Henderson (I'm still at home in SA). I will be delivering in Sumner,WA on Wednesday at 1230. I love it when a plan comes together!
