The Corps of Engineers is considering closing the river due to low water levels.

It appears that over 70% of grain exports are shipped on the Mississippi.

Shipping at the lower end of the Mississippi is focused on petroleum and petroleum products, iron and steel, grain, rubber, paper, wood, coffee, coal, chemicals, and edible oils.

Wow! I had no idea it was that bad.

Talks of the Mississippi being closed as early as next week (first week of 2013).

You're correct, but I said, "most", not "all".
Hope you get a big chunk of it & make some big bucks. Best wishes.

Coils out of AR to st. louis have already started going up on the rate. still cheap IMO but its getting close to decent...........actually i couldnt tell you what they pay i only know what brokers are offering so its hard to tell.

grain heading south out of the north will go on the rail and a lot of it is already south. st. louis elevators were honoring january contracts (when all the farmers sell their grain) in early december and getting it down the river

If it shuts down for any length of time it'll cause some pretty big problems. There aren't enough rail cars and infrastructure to load/unload them in a reasonable amount of time. Over the years railroads have focused too much on east/west...mainly shipping Chinese crap from the west coast in. However, I can't see mobilizing a gozillion trucks to move grain south either...quite the pickle everybody will be in...

It could bring in more freight for trucks but it's going to be bad for many other people. The guys that ship it now have jobs just like you and me and might not soon. Add on to that the higher cost of shipping by other means and it could turn into a mess for many people.
