Hey Rockdocter, if all drivers had at least 2 yrs exp., then the starting wage would be better. The drivers would have a little control, versus a driver with no exp. the co.s have total control over the wages. Example when I worked on the strongest horizontal drill rig in the world, the co. said your getting 10 bucks an hr for driving from now on. Our crew said we won,t be driving then, we flew home. They flew drivers in, they wrecked every truck. The trucks where r model and superliners with V8,s turned up. The loads 280k drill rig, mud rig, d9 widetrack, track hoe, cranes, etc. Our crew had Vietnam sorry if spelled wrong, off rd drivers, helicopter mechanic, pilot, very sharp and hard working men. We built all the drill and mud rigs also. A otr tanker co. I was at had Vietnam off rd. drivers with years of exp, I have over 6 years off rd. exp with years of tanker otr mainly eastcoast runs, 18-38 hrs straight, 90 days straight never took a day off, run a stack of log books. A exp. driver has been in more situtations and is more quilified, even mechanically say your truck won,t start and your air pressure is at 0, because of a new airleak. A exp driver knows what to do, a newb might just back the brakes off then he,ll run into the truck that,s pulling him or he just calls break down service. You keep a new set of tbolts in the cab, you screw them into the front brake chanbers. This is not a personnel attack on you Rockdocter, a few years from now you,ll understand exp. is knowledge. At sni an IC gets priorty over a company driver, what are you going to do when they have IC ,s come in. I have a upper management sni person in the family, I know a thing or two about sni.

I've seen this in North Texas as well. Bigger companies trying to come in, and naturally they bring their 'high revenue/low expenses' model with them.

What lets me sleep at night is the fact that the oil patch will not tolerate a bad company. This goes for anything: fracking crew, water hauling, etc. The reason is simple. That green/black/clear/salty stuff doesn't ever stop coming out of the ground. You miss even one pickup, you'll have a spilled-over tank battery. Schneider will fail where many of the bigs have; they will try a one-size-fits-all model to an oil patch that simply won't have it.

See, you can have a truck stuck in the yard without being used when OTR. Economically, you simply miss a load of freight. If the same is in the patch (no driver because he/she quit or some other reason), then you start having oil missing, tanks overflowing, and really pissed of company men on your hands.

Don't worry about Schneider guys, their not the first bigs that will have come and gone in the patch. Schlumberger and Chesapeake both tried to have their own trucking outfits and quickly learned to farm that out to the local truckers.

Be patient, Schneider won't be around in 2-4 years.

Just finished my 4 days at Nabors, Kenedy, TX. The average day is 12-14 hours, 4 loads. My personel tracker said I walked 6.5 miles, climbed 85 floors and burned 4500 calories. The odometer, 346 miles, all in the Kenedy, Karnes City, Yorktown, Cuero Tx, area. Average load was 180 barrels. Nabors knows how to run in the Patch, and before anyone tries to take me to task for calling it the Patch..........in 1976 when I was a Derrickman on Frio Drilling Rig #3, WE CALLED IT THE PATCH. What were you doing?...........................Bottom line It really does not matter when you got in, or how long you been in. What matters is how you handle the challenges and lifestyle changes. Work hard learn your trade, and seek out new opportunties, and skills. Pay no attention to the "If you ain't Oilfield you ain't SH#T guys.

Thanks Rockdoctor, very informative! I'm thinking of leaving Vegas for Texas. Since the economy tanked, there is very little work here, people are moving out left and right! I have had my CDL for 10 years. I drove for an outfit up in N.D hauling rock to the oilfields. Belly dump work. I want something were I don't have to go OTR, and can be home with my toddler, and wife. Not too interested in the Desert area of Texas, tho. I've heard alot about Houston, and how much work there is. The wife like Austin, and the Hill country. I'm concerned about housing, course! I can easily go back to work up North but, housing sucks, and I hate the cold! Too many years in the high desert!
