264 Rear Axle Ratio???

    I have a friend buying his first truck.He has found a Great starter truck that is priced right and in really good condition, 14L Det. It has a ddirect 10spd with a 264 rear axle ratio.

    Now, I have owned many trucks in the last 20 yrs, but have no experience with this axle ratio. Everything I have owned or currently own has been geared from 3.42 to 3.90. I assume the final gear in the transmission is lower than normal to offset this type rear end ratio??? Anyone have any experience, thoughts, advice on a 264 rear ratio ??

    I did some research online, and found that most of the older Walmart trucks were setup this way.

    Advice ???

    yop, it will do wonders for him.

    Last company I had our best fuel mileage was had with DD13's with 10D and 2.64 rears.

    I have an 05 Columbia with that ratio and let's just say that it SUCKS!! Zero pull in the mountains and city driving with stop and go is a nightmare!!

    Let me add that on the highway cruising is great!!

    The direct is 1.00 in high as opposed to an OD, the truck I drive now has .74 in high or thereabouts with 10 speeds and supposed to be 3.42. axle but I'm not sure I buy that.


    The direct is supposed to be less internal losses in high than an OD and I'm not sure how much real world difference there is, the final ratio of engine revolutions per distance traveled is close to the same for 2.64 direct as with a 3.42 with .74 overdrive.

    I drove one for quite a while with a 12.7, just needed to be able to use the engine not be governed out to force progressive shifting, that modification made mountain driving horrible.

    the company I drove for used them in MN, ILL, WI, IA, MO and SD. Occasionally, they'd head to Twin Falls ID.

    When you think about it does it really make sense to put an overdrive gear set ahead of an underdrive gear set just because we've been doing it this way for years?

    Cowpie1 recently bought a truck speced for mileage. He has many posts/threads on this subject. I havent read many posts from him recently about his truck. I believe he is very happy with his truck. He did alot of research before specing truck. Iirc, he ordered an 18 speed trans? He will see this thread and hopfully will post or send him a pm.

    Thanks for the posts guys, opinions are what im looking for. the hills-mountains would be my concern.

    I had a 91 Freightshaker back in the day with a 10 over with 3.90 rears, and i really liked that setup.

    I am going with him on Monday to check this thing over. I cant wait to drive it. Hopefully we can put it under a trailer and see what she does.

    Yes he has 2.64's and 18 spd. runs around in 17th most of the time, he says he gets excellent mileage.
