Well after almost two years using the laptop for my GPS needs, I am really close to doing the Garmin thing too.

i too have laptop i have used mapquest for getting around locally.
now i am under the idea that MS s/t does not give speech as one is driving.
so i am reluctant to get that plus your going to need a stand or shelf to prop up the pc if your relying on the screen for directions
wheras a portable gps mounted to a windshield or dash announcing uncoming turns appeals to me.
4.3'' screen
text to speech dircetions
portable
truck version if possible
pt's of interest not a feature selling pt. to me
staples has unit for 170.oo that i like ... -
My stand cost $15. I wasn't crazy enough to pay the $230 for a "truckers" stand. I've had this laptop for 3 years...no damage.
My stand sits in the jump seat, PC held in place with straps. I use a mouse, since it would be dangerous to reach across for access while in traffic.
My software with the GPS cost $70. It uses speach recognition, speaks the turns to me well in advance, even repeats them to me as I get closer, and can be set to re-route at specific distances "off" route.
With my 17 inch screen, I have the option to view two (2) turns in advance (in text format) without a loss of the actual map. I can also see up 8 turns or more in advance (using the map), depending on the amount of zoom I preset it for. It auto zooms in and out, depending on my presets.
I can insert and then select differant routes to other stops, well in advance. IE I can have 12 stops for the day, and have each on a seperate tab. All done the day/night before. Or I can set it up as 1 route with 11 stops and one (1) final.
Points of Interest are a desired selling point for me..they include my terminals -
I use Truckmiles by Promiles on my laptop. The problem i'm having now is, I have upgraded to Vista and now my DeLorme GPS serial emulator doesn't work. Apprently it is not Vista compatable. So, I have been looking everywhere and can't find a free GPS serial emulator anywhere. Anyone know where to get one?
