Not really a Peterbilt item, but I had the opportunity to drive a Pete 386 with an MX equipped with the new Allison TC10 TS "automatic" 10 speed. I must say I was impressed with how the transmission operated. This is a twin shaft gearbox that uses a torque converter for starts only. The torque converter multiplies the torque to provide very snappy off-idle starts and then locks up at 4 MPH or less dependant upon load and throttle application, once locked wet clutches shift the five speeds through two ranges to provide 10 speeds.
Very smooth shifts, it will skip gears if lightly loaded, downshifts quickly and in the higher gears almost imperceptively. The truck was geared with a 2.54 rear and the 10th gear is .86 overdrive so a very tall setup. I was 1160 RPM at 65 MPH and could accelerate from that speed smoothly and with good pull. The Allison people say that proper rear axles spec's will be required to prevent torsional issues with such tall gearing but Dana already had rears designed to reduce the issue as does Meritor.
Looks like a useable alternative to automated gearboxes. Allsion says the continuous power application as opposed to an AMT will be a benefit and they claim fuel economy will macth other types of transmissions.
All in all I must say I was impressed althought to be honest they did buy lunch........................

Glad somebody FINALLY got a chance to drive one of these. In my mind it IS the best of both worlds, TQ for starts/stops AND full power shifting.
That is my biggest complaint with autoshift/ultrashift/ultrshift+/freedomline etc. If you are pulling a long hill and the tranny has to shift a couple of times it loses all/most of your momentum and kills you speed for topping the hill.
Was this at a dealership for sale, or is this some kind of ride/drive demo?
Thanks for the info. NEVER mind, just saw you are the PSG and not a driver, I can assume this was a ride and drive?

Yes,
An Allison ride and drive.
There are some TC10 videos on the Allison site and also on Utube. I don't claim to be a
"driver" so my opinion would need to be taken with caution but I was impressed with operation of the transmission. -
It should be a good unit and able to do it all from pickup and delivery to OTR. They finally have them out to show off, thanks for your impressions of it.

I had an opportunity to drive an end dump in Alaska in the 80's that had an Allison in it. Was very impressed. Never could get on board with on in regular OTR work, but have been following what they have been doing, and would seriously consider using an Allison in a new truck when it comes time. The TC10 looks like they really brought it all together for power, shifting, fuel economy, etc. About time!
