Been doing it for 25 years now. Thats how we did it many years ago. Even had a fleet of 6 and all did the same as my dad and I. Why? or sarcasm? Take pride in what u do and all just fall into place. It feels good to think for oneself and not fall into all this money-pit hype. U do know that these GPS's get their routing programs from atlases, right?

I used to drive for PAM and we were specifically told no GPS. I think it may be more of an issue that a pic was taken of her using the gps while driving ie distracted driving. I used a GPS while with PAM but still followed their routing. I will say they have company policies that just appear. For instance I had a power generator strapped on the back of my truck to run my microwave. Perfectly legal, straps were proper WLL rated straps, fuel tank on the genny was always empty while I was driving, fuel was in a properly secured 1 gal dot approved fuel can. Someone in Irving turned me in to safety and I was told, rather rudely, to take it off the truck. Not at home in a week during my scheduled hometime, but right now in the terminal and just leave it there or ship it home. When asked why they said it was illegal, when I pointed out the regs stating it was perfectly legal they then said it's against company policy and it goes off the truck or I do. I turned in my resignation 2 weeks later.

Werner or Swift may take you. Main thing is that you got your CDL-A. I never been asked for a certification. I never bring it up either. You really don't have to go to truck driving school to get a CDL. It is the most convenient way is all. All anyone needs to do is go down to DMV office and take a test to get CDL-A permit. Find a owner operator to teach you, than go back to DMV office to take road test/inspection test. If you pass, than they will give you a CDL-A licence. Total cost is just under $100.00 here in FL if you pass it the 1st time. The hard part is hooking up with an owner operator who is willing to do this. You will need there truck and trailer for testing or rent one from someone like Ryder for around $250.00 plus fuel you use. If you rent rig, you will need someone with a CDL-A to be with you because you only have a permit at this point and time. You already have a licence so you should be good to go. I wouldn't sweat the cert issue. You just need hours behind the wheel. Werner, Swift or team up with owner operator will get you started back up again.

GPS should not hold you back from getting another job unless you used the one on your cell phone. Cell phone usage while driving is a DOT violation. GPS is a company policy and nothing more.

I'm surprised they didn't give you a cert. You earned that.

    Good Luck

Well this is awfully funny to see. I am a driver for PAM, and I have seen this photo. They now use it during orientation. However it is not a gps, it was a cell phone. It was not on the dash either. To be quite honest it looked more like texting than anything else, and in the pic the speedometer clearly read 61 mph.
