I am bringing pretty much what's on the list. I cannot find a Rand-McNally truck atlas locally. Went to 3 different places - all sold out. I'll just pick one up at orientation.

Oompa and D2kuhl, what is your ETA in Des Moines? I should be there by 7pm Sunday.

I found my atlas at a sapp brothers truck stop for $35. I'm taking the greyhound out of Chicago Saturday night so I should be there by 6 am Sunday. I wanted enough time to get settled and have a chance to get anything I might have forgotten.

I always told people to get there Sunday morning or early afternoon if you can so to rest up and get comfortable. Also if you live far away from Des Moines its better to fly if possible. TMC will reimburse you up to the cost of a bus ticket so it will help defray the cost, although you won't get it right away. I flew because I didn't like the idea of 26 hours of travel on a Greyhound bus. I got in at 11am Sunday, first one there and was able to rest and get acclimated. Lots from the East coast like me that took the bus didn't get in until after midnight Sunday and they were beat after a long hard ride on the bus, by the time they were checked in their rooms it was 1 0r 2 am. Its a early morning Monday too. Not sure how many of those made it thru but they weren't too happy come Monday morning.

    Oompa Thanks this.

Google Maps shows 3 possible routes to take from St. Louis to Des Moines, IA:

    1. Head up US-61 North (369 miles)
    2. Take I-70 West to Columbia, MO then take US-63 North (370 miles)
    3. Take I-70 West to I-35 N. (420 miles)
    4. Better Route?

If anyone is familiar with these routes, can you recommend which route to take? I've noticed that option 1 and 2 are much shorter in distance, but are there other factors (i.e. speed limit, traffic, oversize farm equipment using road, etc.) that may not make it the best choice?

    Thanks!

Anyone get a call from a driver saying they were told that they were getting picked up on the way to Des Moines?

This is standard practice for TMC. They are trying to save money by sharing the rental car along the way. I was picked up by two other guys from Michigan heading back to Des Moines to get in their truck after testing out.

the lumber tarps are about 120 lbs that is the heavy lifting part of the test you do have to climb the trailer from the side using the rubrail this is not something you will be doing every day after training it is just to test your ability to lift your own weight onto the deck if need be I am a Trainer for TMC its not as hard as some make it out to be good luck

on the car question no one is forced to get with the trainers right after orientation everyone gets to go home and get their stuff ready for the training to start you would be contacted by who ever your trainer will be to meet him/her at his place or where he parks the truck TMC try's to place everyone with a trainer within 150 miles or less driving your own car is a very nice option as it gets you home faster and they will pay for the gas money or what ever the cost of the bus would have been good luck guys if yall have any more question feel free to mail me
