Okay, I figured I would run this by the board and see what opinion anyone has.
I'm coming down from Albany to Newark tomorrow and am deciding my route. I have a 53x102 that's 13'6 tall. I know I'm restricted to only a few routes, but I also take NJ24 all the time when heading out to get to I-80 and have never had an issue. Is NJ 17 from just south of the NY state line to I-80 a good route, or not? Any major restrictions (height, weight, etc?). I'll be empty, so weight would have to be pretty restrictive. Height is more my concern. I'm sure it's considered a 96" width road (and 48' length). But, I know most roads you can get away with it on (Vineland, NJ, US40, NJ 24, US1/9 going into Newark/Elizabeth area, etc).
Any thoughts would be appreciated. The only options I'm seeing are I-287 to I-280 to NJTP, or eating the Tappen Zee Bridge toll and staying I-87 south to the GW and crossing back for free and taking the NJTP south. This isn't a direction I run at all, so I'm stumped on which is the best recommended, or cheapest, safest, etc way.
Thanks.

I generally just stick to the interstates and US highways when in NJ.
I'd take the 287/280 route. No need to go down and take the GWB and go through the bronx, unless you like sitting in traffic and feeling like somebody kicked the living #### out of you from how rough that "road" is.kerosene jockey Thanks this. -
17 won't put him on the GWB... but I agree, come down 287, it goes right to Newark anyway.

17 is fine if you want to go that way. There are a couple of 13'9" overpasses but you'll be fine. It was a main truck route down to 80 before 287 was built.
Ruthless Thanks this. -

17 is a royal PIA with traffic. It's an old route put in before the interstates. It's a frustrating road ... With traffic and lights. I would personally do 287 to 80 to 280.

there arent any lights from 287 to 80 that i can remember. its not a great road but for nj it is fine. plenty of trucks, 53' 102" will have no problem, i have used it plenty. much quicker than going around.

US17 is fine, and that's all there was back in the day before 287 was put in. Some really good diners along that route. US 1/9 will beat you and your truck to death, however.

Never take the SB US1/9 local to express entrance just south of the Pulaski Skyway at any more than 30 mph. There's a manhole that's recessed about 5 inches down and there's no avoiding it in a truck. Even if you catch the edge of it, it's going to rattle the hell out of your truck.
I'm still deciding on NJ17 or the longer way. Now, that's a good way down to NJ3, or just to I-80? If you add in tolls, 287-280 is looking like the better option. Just that one toll between 280 and US1/9 Truck route exit. -
