What is the difference between a recap and a reset? I know what a reset is but not 100% sure about the recap.

Recap is just adding up total hours used to show how many are left out of your 70

The amount of hours added together from lines 3 and 4, which are then added together as one number. That total from this equation is to be subtracted from your 70. Thus giving you the amount of hours left available to drive.

All this reset stuff is driving me nuts. I had a newer driver come in and tell me he couldn't go on a run the next day cause he was out of hours and needed a reset. So I says hey, let me see your recap, he says, what? So I go through his log and he picks up 11 hours the next day and could easily do the run. Why are people SO focused on resets?

    You have 3 clocks....
14 hour---as soon as you go on duty (fuel, load, Pre trip, etc.) your 14 hour clock starts ticking. It cant be paused and 14 hours later your truck must be off the drive line. (unless you split log, but thats a whole other topic)

11 hour---This is your driving clock. With in the 14 hour clock you can only drive 11 hours. This pauses every time you go off the drive line (off duty, on duty, or sleeper)

70 hour---You can work 70 hours with in the last 8 days. This includes driving time and on duty time. When you run out you must stop untill you gain more hours.

10 hour reset----After 10 hours in the sleeper or off duty your 14 & 11 hour clocks reset giving you a new full set of hours. (assuming you have enough left on your 70 hour clock)

34 hour reset---If you were on duty more then 70 hours in the last 8 days you must stop. If you are off duty with truck stopped for 34 hours, the 70 hour resets and you have all 70 hours available again.

Recap---Refers to when you have driven more then 8 days without a 70 hour reset. Each day you get more hours added to your 70 hour clock depending on how many hours you were on duty& driving 8 days ago. You also loose the amount you drive in the current day.

If you say you are running a recap this week, it means you did not get a 34 hour rest after the previous 8 days so you did not start the week with a fresh 70 hours. Every day, hours you drive to day get used up and hours you used 8 days ago get added. If you use up your 70 in less then 8 days you need to take a 34 hour rest because the hours added from 8 days ago are 0. After a 34 hour reset, all the hours form the last 8 days go to 0. Until you drive 8 days no time will be added unless you take a 34 hour brake.

Its hard to understand it until you run 2 weeks in a row and all in a sudden are short on your 70. If you run hard for 5 days and use up all your hours, the hours added are 0 since they are before your last reset. You have to take a reset because otherwise you cant drive until 8 days after the first day you drove. your also limited to the same hours as the first day you drove.

The amount of on duty - driving hours for each day following a 34 hour restart. Example 10 hours worked (on duty - driving) 6 days in a row = 60 hours. Most people run the 70hr 8 day set up. The backside of a log book cover has the grid and moreless tells how to figure up the hours.

There's nothing hard to understand. People are all worried about taking a reset when they don't need to. Then you have the people who think you have to take one. They're even worse trying to explain how to recap their hours. Apparently schools have decided to dumb everything down and skip trying to explain the math portion of tracking hours used.

Consider the following....the driver is forced to take 2 days off to build up hours. This shows an 11 hour driving day plus 1 hour of on duty time. He could just as easily take a 34 hour reset and only take 1.5 days off.....its even more critical if on day 1 he worked less hours because then his recap would have less available. Some drivers run on recap all the time, but if you run hard enough, you will need 34 hour resets to minimize down time.
