I also agree with Pape, look into maverick, I started with Roehl and got good training. I would stay away for Western Express.

All companies are not the same. We hired a guy who was in Roehl's "Bridge Beam" division and he made more money in the first two weeks hauling our legal flatbed stuff then he did the entire last month hauling beams. We had a guy from TMC who didnt last two weeks because he constantly needed to have his hand held to get his job done. I dont think there is an "Ideal" open deck company. I wouldnt refer anybody to work where I do for the simple reason I know what kind of BS you have to put up with here.

Not to hijack Pharaoh's thread but I would look into ATS, if I'm correct St. Cloud is only about a half hour away from you. I went there when I left Roehl and I loved it, if I was to go back otr I woulf go back there in a heart beat. PM me if you have a questions.

Have you considered TMC? Their hometime is pretty good, and they do have a percentage pay plan (up to 32%). TMC is flatbed only.

Skateboarders can back. We will back circles around dock bumpers. We back into docks all the time, that are inside dark cave doorways into concrete bays with two inches of clearance on each side and still manage to get it in without hitting anything.

EDIT: Also automatic trucks stink. Drove 1 for 3 months, hated it.

My first solo flatbed delivery was 90 degree back down a hill into a building with 2 inches on each side of the trailer. Yeah i was sweating on that, but I got to agree hearing the whole skateboaders cant back is bs lol.

I did contact TMC also, but they decided to go with another driver and left me in the dark as to why. I started with refers with Stevens Transport and moved to vans. Now I am ready for the open decks. My ultimate goal is to get my experience up and purchase my own truck and either step deck or double drop. I am really into this because I know I can make money. I have a strong work ethic and I usually drive anywhere from 450 to 650 per day depending on the load. I don't make a lot of stops etc...I want to consider myself an asset to a company and not a liability. Thanks to everyone for your opinions!! I am glad to see that people are helpful and what you say will help in my decision.

I drove an automatic truck this week for 2 1/2 days and when I got to the yard and saw that my truck was out of the shop, I flew back into it!! No autos for me....
