Vac truck training courses, worth it or not?

    Any one have experience with taking a vac truck training course helping them get hired! I see many companies offer to train staff, some even with no experience.

    Is it like the $20k heavy equipment operator certificate? Had more than one guy tell me that their company does not acknowledge that anymore and prefers to train operators themselves.

    Just a cash grab? Or worth the time and money?

    Can't see what they can teach you that real world experience and pay won't.

    Save your money and time. Hire on as a swamper and learn on the job.

    How much is the course? It's a real crappy job but there is tons of jobs available.

    Lakeland College in Vermillion offers it for $1600, 3 day course. I see lots of job openings for vac truck drivers, and I suppose there are all sorts of reasons why. Seeing as I already have a class one with lots of experience with decks, vans, oversize and some tanker work, was thinking of learning to run a Vac truck and see what I can get for a job running semi vac or something.

    Just not really wanting to get into flat deck tarp loads again. Winch truck is alright but imagine it is always in deep mud as first one in or last out. Was considering Vac truck as service rig work is likely a bit more steady, and at least you are not hand bombing loads. Staying away from any OTR, and really looking at fly in and out jobs, and Vac truck seems to be one of the jobs that you can always find, and the pay seems not bad.

    Would rather handle frozen tarps than a sanded off 4" hose. Or trying to blow off oil when it's -40.

    Paying $20K for a vac course would really suck ........... get it ........ ? .............. SUCK !!

    Bah ....... never mind.

    Is there currently a certification ladder for vac work like there is for Haz Mat type Vac work ? If NOT then let the perspective hiring co. train you to THEIR specs, and take the experience and run with it.

    I've vac'ed up lots of chemicals and have never heard of a certification ladder. As long as you have TDG and whimis, your good to go.

    Winch tractor is a pretty good gig

    the bed trucks on site usually move the skids to a decent place to line up and winch on. Skid loads are quick to tie down too.

    Still have to chain often, but you will with most all oilfield trucking jobs.

    Don't have to chain up much doing infield work. Never carried chains when running a semi vac
