potential truck abondonment what are my options

    I recently left transam on the basis they would not run me. I would sit at truck stops for 4 days on one load that was 500 miles. I came on hometime and found that my bank account was in the negatives due to making no money with this company. My intentions were to give them my two weeks notice and return their truck to north carolina. Well had I done that, I would have been stuck in north carolina with no money and no way home. So I had to leave it at a local truck stop. I have a baby due in march and i just couldn't make 200 to 300 dollars a week and expect to survive. I was with them for 6 months and in that time earned the top gun award for no preventables and no late loads. I know I am a new driver with only 6 months experience, but do you know of any company that would take me and give me another chance with a possible truck abandonment on my dac? Transam was almost willing to rehire me but some lousy dispatcher said I cussed him out ,which is a lie, but what can I say? It's his word versus mine. That makes me think maybe they didn't hit me on leaving the truck. A copy of my dac report will be in about 2 weeks so I will know. If anybody has any suggestions please respond.     If you live near a big city, see if you can get a passenger endorsement. This will allow you to at least drive a bus if you have to fall back on that. You've already gotten the CDL, so you may as well fortify it. These days are transition days in trucking, with diesel headed for 3.50 and 4 bucks a gallon. You can't rely on the Class-A jobs to provide what they provided back in the 'dollar-a-gallon' days, and you need a whole lot of security right now. I'd get the Class-B just in case.

    dalejr8fan It's to late to tell you not to abandon the truck, that is never a good idea. Yea it's a good idea to give two weeks notice but that by itself is not unforgivable. At this point I would say what I would have said before you did all that, talk to some other drivers at the truck stop you are parked in, some body might have a care. Pickup one of the many truck mags. and make a call or two. In Little Rock, the Jb hunt terminal is within walking distance of the Maverick terminal, yea not the best pay or company but might get you out of a sticky situation. As a new guy in an industry that is not for everybody, you have to keep your wits about you. If you start fighting with your dispachter he will likely tell you any number of lies, he knows you are alone, he knows your not sure, he knows you are scared. Get a cheap cell phone and at those times call a person with whom you can be reassured a bit and make a good choice. If I ran into you at a truckstop and could have helped you, I would have, but if you don't make an effort, how would I know that you needed help? Keep your head, 'cause you are the only one that is there most of the time. Keep posting here someone may have some better info than this for you. Good luck. drive55cat

    if it shows up on your DAC you are a dead duck when it comes to get on with a major company. I will make the same suggestion that I made to my nephew a while back, try to get onto a local concrete company, you make good pay, home every night, will usually get a lot of prevailing wage work, and more overtime than you will want. He made over 50 grand last year with bennys and since we live in Ohio he has been laid off drawing unemployment since the end of November, a 3 or 4 month paid vacation.

    This is what I do and if you have any common sense to ya at all you can do this job. It is a very easy job. I have been off ssince dec 7th and made 43K last year. From the looks of it I won't be going back until beginning of march and am paid 560 a week to do nothing. I make a little axtra $$ with running on some cash runs for friends and aquaintences wich is easy to do in Iowa with the amount of O/O grain trucks around.

    Before you request a copy of your DAC, I hope you gave Transam at least a month to report any potential issues. Sometimes companies are a bit slow reporting to DAC.

    Otherwise, if you get a premature report, you might believe that your DAC is clean, but it isn't.

    From what I know of them I'll gaurantee trans am puts it on your DAC. You can probably forget about getting a job with any CO that checks DAC's. which is most and it's not like you can go around asking them if they heck DAC because then they know you have a prob. You only have 6mo experience and you abandoned a truck.... I wouldn't hire you. It's not cheap to recover an abandoned truck and it's a major liability to have a truck just sitting somewhere. They take this more seriously than accidents or tickets especially with no experience.
