If your not at home, your at work following company rules. Not being home for 5 days a week at $95,000 a year is a pinch more than $15 an hour.

If Walmart can pay that good and treat drivers well, why can't the others do that?

Walmart has limited job opportunities. When there is "extra" work available outside carriers are utilized. Schneider, and JB Hunt have been used in the past to supplement the Walmart fleet. There has been talk in the past of Schneider offering to take over Walmart DC operations and mothballing the dedicated WalMart fleet.
In todays market place it is about saving money and using the lowest cost carrier when possible. I suspect it wont take too much longer before the corporate penny pinchers decide to cut those well paid driving jobs and hire and outside carrier to do the same job for much less.
Of course if you can get your foot in the door and take advantage of those high wage jobs now I say got for it but be sure to save some of that money for the future. You never know when things will change (usually for the worst). -
I don't know if you can say Walmart is the best job. Old Diminion .59cpm, UPS Freight .61 cpm. 3 yrs to top out. Home daily. Never hear any complaints on boards or from ppl that work here like Walmart. My LTL Co. pays less, had a coworker turn Walmart Down cause he's home more at my job, think he's making .47cpm. Old D is very similar to Walmart, treat their ppl well but very safety orientated. I know a driver making 120k before he had a incident. These companies though are easier to get into than Walmart, which erks me with Walmarts hiring process. Won't look at you unless you have ten years for a Otr job? Rather be home everyday and make the same money and treated well. You can land these jobs and with only 2-3 yrs driving exp. Just think Wally World is a little stuck up.
bigdogpile and sdlm Thank this. -
UPS freight was at .65 cpm 2 years ago. They've probably had 2 raises since then. The package division makes more. Old dominion has come a long way in the last few years. Walmart pays low for driving and pays extra for extra stuff but who wants to do extra stuff. They also don't go home everyday. Definitely not the best job but are probably the best otr carrier to drive for aside from big companies that work for the gubernment such as Fema and power companies.

The extra work is the same extra work you would do at LTL companies. Drop & Hook, stop offs. It makes up for the lack of cpm that the LTL companies offer.

I'm not going to call anybody out here. But some of you are just repeating what you've heard, or what you think you've heard about WM. It probably isn't the "best job" out there, especially if you value being home every nite, although some of the drivers are home every nite, but certainly not the majority, and none of the new drivers. One of the comments above was particularly ignorant about the pay structure. That said, WM is one of the best driving jobs out there. I went to work for them 15 years ago and averaged $.49 per mile my first year. How many driving jobs paid $.49 per mile in the first year of employment, in 1998? It is safe to conclude that my per mile rate is significantly higher now. That said, there are other driving jobs out there that are close or maybe a little better, as far as compensation is concerned, that I probably wouldn't quit to come drive for WM if I was happy where I was at. (being home every nite would be a huge bonus as far as I'm concerned!)

I am on cloud nine. Especially after reading how long some people have been trying to get in. I have seven years driving. I applied in April of this year... got the call to set up my first interview two weeks ago. Had my interview yesterday. Interview went great. Then came the pre trip and road test. That went great. Then I met with the HR lady. She said they would call me in 6-8 weeks and if my background stuff comes back good (it will) I got the job! Then she discussed compensation which surprised me as it was my understanding that wasn't discussed til the 'second' interview (official job offer)...but all I can say is...WOW...I now know why they smile a lot! It's a no-brainer.

Any chance you could post those figures on here so that others could compare their figures against yours? I think it would be very beneficial to those that are striving to find a career rather than just a job.
I can assure you that i am very happy at my employer and definitely will not leave until I retire from here. Teamster driver, home every night, Mon-Fri work week and over 80k per year.
