walmart is the best driving job i've ever had

Well a little late but mentoring is done. Ran by myself on Monday and Tuesday. No problems. I really enjoy the fact of being able to leave out and not have to worry too much about time and rushing. This is a very easy going job. On Friday I start my work week. Scheduled start time, scheduled home time. I will NEVER ever here from my coordinator "we don't have anything to get you home, but we do have this hot load to Cali for you instead." From here on out, me and my family will be able to live comfortably with a company that will keep me busy, home when I am supposed to be and care for me as a driver.

 

I'm not far behind...talked to them yesterday, everything is good, they are just waiting for my criminal background check. of course that will be squeaky clean. transportation manager said he wants to start me ASAP even though I may be the only one in the orientation. Expecting the call near the end of this week or beginning of the next. Very much looking forward to this. Actually heard an advertisement on satellite radio today for driveforwalmart.com. Not very often you hear them advertise for drivers. Now I have a question for you: you may not be able to answer this yet, but maybe you already know or you could answer after your weekend at home... I have heard conflicting information on how much home time you get. I've heard you get two full days and I've heard that it's only a day and a half. What is your understanding so far? Not that it would be a deal killer but it would be nice to know. Are you being hired as an extra is the first question? If so, then you would be on a 5/2 like me. Out for 5, home for 2. There are many other "programs" for drivers within. The only exception to this is when they do mandatory work extensions when it is busy. I have it for the next 3 weeks to the 4th of July. So I may be home a day and a half, or two full days depending on my hours. They will want you to run out your 70 by day 5. Of course for the first month they want you to take your time and learn the system. This is what I know as of right now. I have been hired on as an extra and I am full time. I am just going to wait for re-alignment and hope I can get an assigned truck. Until that point, I have to slip seat. It won't take long, maybe a year I might have to wait, but it will be worth it.

 

I am on a 6/3 today was my go home day. I was done at 1600 home by 1800. so i have the rest of the night off and thursday, friday and saturday. Report back ready to roll sunday morning 0800. you get full days off . Ran over 3000 miles this week....

 

yeah extra board is just walmart lingo, you will always have work and will have a truck soon. so guys like the extra board and stay there.... best of luck

 

Sounds like too much time away from home and too much driving to me.

 

the 6 /3 was my choice the 6 days fly by and then 3.5 days home.... making six figures dont think i am suffering to bad.

 

Sure...its not for everyone. I enjoy my hometime just as much as the next guy, but I chose a tradeoff. Besides, right now I work 13-14 hours a day, drive 35 miles each way, and by the time I get home I don't have very much time to spend with the family anyway. I want to provide for my family the best that I can. It would certainly be different if my kids were still little. My family is my first priority, not my home time, and driving is what I get paid to do. It would be selfish for me too turn down this opportunity in lieu of home time. My kids are older now, the youngest is almost 16. My wife is ok with this, in fact she was the one who told me to apply. A Walmart driver came through her check out (she works at our local Walmart), and she got to talking with him. She knows that this is something I have wanted to do, and she was really excited with what the driver told her, and she told me to put my application in. So I have her full support, which makes it a lot easier. I would never have considered making a career change for just any company. This is definitely not your average company. You are treated, respected and compensated as you deserve, and this is a company where you can be truly proud of what you do. I'm extremely proud that I had what it took to get hired. Just a different perspective for people to consider.

 

I probably already asked you this question so forgive me if I am repeating myself, but can I ask how long you had to wait to get a 6/3? I wouldn't mind suffering with that either . Also, how accurate is the Navigo as far as routing you to the stores? I know from my time at Johnstown, some (OK, A LOT) of the stores are...interesting to find.

 

The Navigo is pretty much for the most part spot on. If it is wrong, all you have to do is call in and let someone know and they will fix it. Also directions are given on the trip sheets as well so all you have to do is compare the two to make sure. Some drivers also run their own GPS along side the Navigo to make sure its proper.
