So, what's it like living in a truck?

I spent 2.5 years solid living in a truck, which actually isn't saying much when you figure just how little most of us get home anyway. I really enjoyed it! It was hard the first few weeks as I got used to the sleeper and dealing with truly being alone and got rid of a bunch of crap that I thought that I needed. By the end of my OTR days I had everything down to one big duffel bag with clothes and toiletries, briefcase, tool totes and my laptop. Took longer to walk out and grab my car and drive it back to the truck than it did to move out. I got the best sleep when I was OTR, as long as I wasn't driving some stupid schedule like wake up at 6am to go unload at 7am, to sit until noon to get unloaded then have to park it for 10 because my next pickup isn't until 11pm and then have to drive all night.

I hardly ever used an alarm clock. I just went to bed and woke up when my body said it was time to get up. I'd get up and go for a walk and work out and then start puttering around the truck. Before I know it, it's time to log a Pretrip and get underway.

 

I like my sleeper- it is cozy and a welcome retreat after a hard day of work. But, you have to make your sleeper into a little home. Stock it well with food, drink, comfortable bedding, a small rug for your feet, things to entertain yourself (tv, books, whatever you like to do) and remember to always keep it clean. And leave work OUTSIDE of the sleeper berth when you step into it. Of course, it depends on the person. If you do not do well in confined or small spaces, you may not like it.

 

I hauled reefer. Got kind of annoyed when I had to run it on cycle. In the winter, I would switch my reefer to constant and run jumper cables to my truck to keep the bunk heater going.

Living in a truck isn't bad. I kept mine super clean. No shoes in the back.

Lonely, but it's kind of great. I prefer to work alone and it can be nice having the space to yourself.

 

OH, and I would keep TV shows and movies on my computer. Download new stuff on iTunes whenever I got to go home.

 

Get a chair and go sit in a closet for 14 hours only come out for restroom breaks and there ya go.

I bought a better mattress
have an apu with frig tv 2500 watt inverter
laptop phone microwave toaster oven
everything I need wherever I stop
don't mess with the TS cuisine much
get a room a couple of times a month on a reset
it is all ok

 

i got all the creature comforts including lawn chairs and BBQ for them nice sunny days its not bad i actually prefer staying in the truck rather then going home most times just so i dont have to deal with the gf once in a while i'll rent a hotel room somewhere nice and relax by the pool but there are times usually around the 4-6 week mark enough is enough and i wanna go ride my harly or something of the like

 

It sucks...

guess I'm just a local driver at heart, I only drive OTR for the $$$....

 

If you are not claustrophobic, enjoy solitude, not so big that will feel uncomfortable moving around inside of it and if you can carry everything that you need, it's ok. I like it pretty much. The truck has been my only home for 5 yrs now and all I miss is a shower and a sink in here. But nevertheless, I cook everyday and even wash myself inside the truck if I need so. Heck, when I was 5 yrs old, I used to get inside my mom's wardrobe (not closet), it was a furniture to store clothes... I would sit inside of it and close the door for almost 1 hr. Just to hide from the world and be alone...

 

How do you watch TV? Direct TV? Netflix?
