Give them a try, the price is FREE. They do have ads but not a big issue. Or you can pay a few bucks to get rid of the ads, after u try the free versions.

There is the free 5-0 Radio Police Scanner Lite and the 5-0 Radio Pro with more features, but wondering if it is worth extra cost.
There are also other well known scanner apps (with good ratings) such as the Scanner Radio Pro, Storm Chase Buddy and Scanner Buddy

 

Sorry for the delay. I would go with the free version first, then if you like it, buy it.
Did you try any of the apps yet? I listened to the Boston PD last night after the Red Sox won the World Series, was crazy on the scanner! Over 7000 listeners were on the Boston freq.

 

On the top of my mini truck which was all black I had a bar on top with 2 flood lights and a square plastic box in the middle . In the box was a radar detector which led to a small neon blue light under my dash. About 3am in the morning going 75 through Virginia it went crazy with the blinking. I downshifted to 50. I put on the flood lights and up ahead there was several troopers and cars being pulled over. One had a radar detector in my direction. It sure paid that day. If they sell those kits today it would be worth it. Now being retired I have no need to hurry. I just go 5 over the limit in the left lane. I also was celebrating in a van with my now wife 35 years ago when a call came over my scanner to check on my truck. I was gone in a second. It is legal in my state for radar and police radios in vehicles

 

Hello Zig Zag: I have just found the time to not only download the Scanner Radio Pro app (there is a paid version for $2.99). I was able to compare this app with my Baofeng UV5R 2 meter/70cm all purpose handheld commercial/amateur radio that I will sometimes use to monitor the entire Dallas/Ft. Worth area (police-fire-EMS etc) from a distance of 30-45 miles out.

Scanner Radio Pro has a 3-5 minute average delay time on reports (this can be crucial when there is major event going on)! There were also a few transmission time outs noted whereas my Baofengs continued to transmit activity.

Another bummer with Scanner Radio Pro is that it does not include the channel frequency being listened to on all its city settings. Some showed this info and quite a few did not.

I still stand by my earlier comments that nothing beats digital monitoring with GRE PSR 800, 600 or 500, Radio Shack Pro 106 or Pro 18, or the Uniden HomePatrol, 996XT and 396 XT (if you can handle the programming).

For analog monitoring I will stick with the two Baofeng dual band radios which equals a total 4 freq's that I can monitor and then change 1 of those freq's over to the GMRS, FRS, D.O.T channels or HAM Radio voice bands and repeaters to talk. And I can use the same Baofeng radios to work the orbiting Satellites using a home brew tape measure/pvc pipe yagi antenna!

Next up I will compare the 5.0 Radio Police Scanner Lite, but it has quite a few negative reviews.

Hi everyone I am new to trucking I was also thinking of putting in my two scanners in my truck which are ( uniden 996 and BCT 15) I also have many more which are a little older. But I love the Uniden radios they are very easy to use and program. Which you can download the programing software from http://www.butel.nl/ they have many more programs for different type of scanner radios which are free as will. Also go to http://www.radioreference.com/ they have every radio frequency in the country which if you sign up has a member, which is not to expensive you can use the programing software from butel to download all the frequencies you want and it will send the info right in to your radio it is less then a 5 minute job very reliable. Just thought some of this info might help you all who are interested in radio communications. I have been a licensed Ham Radio Operator for a couple years and my whole life I have been in to radio communications. But I do have a question how do you guys install a radio scanner ( Antenna wise) Do you just mount the radio in the cab and use the telescoping antenna or do you actually get an outside antenna and mount it on the mirror. I have never installed radio communications in to a big rig before. I also plan on installing my uniden CB and possibly by Kenwood Ham radio but I don't know that maybe to much. I have to figure out where I can mount the antenna's especially if I get a rig that has plastic mirrors.

 

Around here the small town cops use regular radios.

The funny thing is that the local PD is actually on a frequency allocated to land surveyors, you just have to love the FCC double allocating frequencies.

 

If you have check my previous post; I described the interior aluminum cabinet I had installed in my truck and the contents (Cobra CB, Yaesu FT450, Yaesu 2900, Radio Shack Pro 2600, Uniden 996XT with ScannerMaster Spectrum GPS, Kenwood D710A). I was once using a Slim Jim ladder line 2m, 70cm, and 800mhz antenna by N2TAX (www.twowayelectronix.com); Believe it or not I had it wound around the exterior marker visor and it worked excellent for me! Could even transmit using same antenna with my Kenwood TH D72A. Also used a variety of CB, HF and VHF mirror mounted steel antennas. Aim High
