I have a 4300-300 and LOVE it. No problems what so ever. All depends on the tune !!
-
Take it to a good shop and have them bench test it. Also have them look at your antenna set up.

I ran connex for a few years. Had a 4300HP and it was nothing but trouble. Kept popping input caps in it and other things. I was told the 4600 turbo was better. Well that one developed issues also. Would not key up unless you had the power cranked up on it, modulation issues that just could not seem to get fixed. Took it down threw it in the bunk and put up a Galaxy 949 and hooked up an amp behind it. I picked the Galaxy because I could turn down the wattage output to run the amp without over doing it. I have far less money tied up into the Galaxy and the amp then I did the Connex radios and everyone says I sound ten times better. Flip the amp on and boom I am talking to pretty much who ever I want.
I am done with 10 meter radios even though I was a hard core advocate of them because of their output. -
you need to find a shop that wont rip out your limiter and will tune the radio as it should be tuned rather than the clip and snip, swinging like a winsheild wiper that so many people think a radio has to set up like in order to be heard. if a shop pushes these kinds of mods the walk away because this is what you end up.
i would guess that the radio was just poorly tuned with power in mind but thats all that was touched. this is a radio that must be tuned all around, receive and transmit or you will end up only getting half of the performance from it. i have used connex radios for years with never any problems such as this.
find a good shop to tune it right and you should be fine.
