Most Fedex Freight jobs are now combo dock/driving jobs. You will work the dock for a set number of hours per day and run a trip, usually less than 200 miles. You get your run based on a bid system, with the bottom drivers being on the extra board. There's no way of knowing how much you'll make per week as you won't have a bid run yet.
Fedex is not the great company it used to be, as indicated by the way the drivers operate nowadays. They are given a set amount of hours to complete a run, and assigned points for failing to make it. Too many points, and you're gone. This normally wouldn't be bad, except your gate time is pretty much written in stone, even if they don't get your trailers loaded until shortly before your gate time. This is why they are driving like idiots lately. Their jobs depend on it.
My brother in law is working out of the Harrisburg terminal. He makes 61 cpm and somewhere near $24/hr, but I'm not exact there. I used to drive for them until I had some health problems in 2009, and I moved to Florida. but I am still friends with some of the drivers, and we talk often.
I hope this answers a little of your questions. Don't be deterred from working there, just know what to expect. You will be home every day, and off on weekends, unless you offer to work it. My brother in law usually works one weekend day, and he says he's averaging around $1700 per week, but he's pretty high on the seniority board. I believe him, cause when I was there we ran teams, and we made that almost every week then. The teams are gone, and so are a lot of the old drivers who don't want to do dock work.
Hope it all works out for you. Good luck.Space Man Spiff, blairandgretchen and road_runner Thank this. -

I hired on with FedEx National in June 2010. Two months later they announced the merger with FedEx Freight, being on the bottom of the board I had to move the family 400 miles to a terminal with an opening. FedEx "realigns" every 6 months, adjusting to new freight flows and adding or deleting jobs as required. When your near the bottom you are always on edge as to what the next adjustment is going to do to you. Freight slows way down in January and chances are you wont work much. My second January there I only worked about one week. I seen the writing on the wall got on with a company with rock solid freight (WalMart).
Don't get me wrong, FedEx is a decent company with many benefits and great pay. Though they are not union you work by a union type seniority system. I would have been happy to stay for 20 years but I've also got a family to feed and need to stay busy. If your flexible and can deal with a flexible paycheck for a few years then it might work out for you. I'm sure things have settled down a bit a couple years past the merger but the words of wisdom from the drivers are "Don't buy a house". And I seen a few drivers in a world of hurt from buying houses after making a transfer only to be told a year later they have to move again to keep the job.
Good luck!Last edited: Dec 17, 2013

A lot of road drivers don't get work as FedEx subcontracts a lot of freight through other trucking companies and the rail roads as its cheaper for them, hence all the new equipment. And I heard guys with 10+ years sitting. We subcontract out a lot at UPSF but thankfully the union is trying to end it. If you can survive the extra board then go for it, trust me it is not fun. The only reason I took the UPSF job was because I was hired onto a set bid for every day work. It's very rare and often unheard that that happens

thanks to everyone for all the info im gonna go for the interview and see what happens the ad i responded to said local city driver just an interview anyway may not turn into an offer any way we see what happens.good luck to you all

Don't be too afraid of limited checks working casual or extra board. The extra board guys stay busy in Summer when everybody wants vacation time, plus a 20 hour check at most LTLs pays as much or more than an OTR van company driver makes in a whole week.
