I just got a Dell Venue 8 Pro, the basic model without keyboard or case.

It is quite possibly the best and most useful gadget I have ever purchased. It's given me a new appreciation for windows 8.1, and is actually smoother and smarter than my Acer touchscreen laptop. The fact that it has expandable memory via an SDXC mini card slot just adds to it's over all luster. :)

I am so glad you brought this up, I am going to get a tablet in the very near future and need some input, does it have a STAND ALONE GPS? And by stand alone I mean will the GPS operate WITHOUT an internet connection? I have been on the edge of buying a "Truckers Tablet" for a long time because they are the only ones that will say positively yes it will work without an internet connection. When I ask the blue shirts I get the deer in the headlight look, and the best answer I can get out of the Geek Squad is "I think so ummm it should".

I don't know of any GPS that requires internet. It communicates with satellites to get your position. My nexus 7 has gps and it will always know where I am.

I think what you meant is what software does it have. The nexus 7 has no pre installed software to work with the GPS that doesn't require internet. I'm not aware of any free software that would turn it into a trucker GPS.

I installed the free version of CoPilot which works fine but doesn't do truck.

Mapfactor is a free and full-feature Android app. It has truck profile for Height, weight, length, WPA.

Unless the tablet you buy comes in a 3g/4g, model GPS won't work.

I have a Monster M7 (7 inch tablet) with built-in GPS receiver, no data connection is needed at all.

For truck navigation Mapfactor is a free app and has a truck profile and it really works. You need about 4GBs minimum free space for the program and offline map data, which you must download onto the tablet. Then it works just like any navigation device and program.

I also paid for an app called OsmAND+ because I liked the free version a lot, but it's more for cars and has no truck profile. I also like that you can customize it a lot, build your own routes with way points. Has many indicators, for road speed, compass, time to destination, many many more. It's worth $7.99 if you like this kind of thing. In my opinion it's better than my in-dash TomTom navigation.

I waited a long time for a good tablet with built-in GPS receiver at a good price. Monster M7 specs are amazing and has a beautiful 1280x800 HD IPS panel with wide viewing angle. For $99 at Walmart.

I have some questions for you tablet users:

    1) Do most, if not all, tablets have USB ports on them? if so,
    2) Could I use a USB hub to make more USB ports (like you can do on laptops/desktops)? and finally,
    3) Can you use regular wireless keyboards and mice with tablets or do you need something specific for tablets? (I have a Logitech K360 keyboard and Logitech M510 mouse)

Yes, wireless keyboards and mice uses batteries, but with a good smart charger and good, rechargeable batteries, that is not an issue (Sony Smartcharger + Sanyo Eneloops = win :biggrin_25519: )
