I have heard it costs more than 1800 from other makes, but in reading the engine and truck manuals, it explained the process, it would be difficult to physically run out of fluid, although problems do happen with anything mechanical. Always blame the driver or operator when something happens.
I never liked the old Volvos I drove, and I'm not seeing one where I am driving now in my future, old new or otherwise.
I heard more like 10 k for running an ISX out of DEF, but the thing is 'heard', I don't really know. Not having DEF worked out really well for International trucks and John Deere farm implements, actually cost them dearly in sales rank and reputation. I wouldn't have been surprised if some of the high cost horror stories for allowing them to run out had originated from OEMs who didn't use DEF, but yours is the 1st actual story where a figure was mentioned. -
ONE POINT THREE CENTS PER MILE.
i top off every fill up. cuz you just never know when the pump isn't going to work. which seems to be an all too common occurence. -
Make scr delete if you don't to drive to California.

When you run out of DEF what is it that gets damaged that makes things so expensive to repair?
JPenn Thanks this. -

It runs about 1.5 cents per mile on my truck. ALWAYS buy bulk, do not use the jugs. I bought a jug to keep in the side box for a "just in case" situation. Running out of DEF will not damage anything but it will de-rate the motor and leave you sitting. I believe the EPA requires the engine manufacturers to force the computer to de-rate the engine if you're out of DEF so you can't be one of those big bad polluters. if you put diesel or something else in the DEF tank then that may be another story.

I didn't run it out, but got the word after another driver did.
