I am new here and I searched the threads to see if this question had been asked and with as little patience as I have, I didn't find one so thought I would ask. I am 59 years old and have pulled flat/step for the past 25 years of my 40 years of driving and have hauled some crazy stuff but the one that really sticks in my mind is in 1977 I picked up in Morgan City, La. at the docks. It was a diver decompression chamber...with the diver still in it. I hauled it(and him) to a hospital in New Orleans, I had a state cop in front, an ambulance behind, and a doctor in the cab with me on walkie talkies so he could talk to the diver and the ambulance crew, I could only drive 45 mph and was allowed to drive in the left lane on I 10 because back then the road was so bad in the right lane that they were afraid it would bounce the diver around too much. When I got to New Orleans they cleared the whole street so I could back into the building at the recieving door. It paid 5.50 a mile and lunch and breakfast was paid for. While unstrapping the chamber I saw the diver in the little window giving me a big ole thumbs up. 1st load I ever hauled that said thank you.

Never hauled much unusual but I have driven off-road in Glacier and Yellowstone delivering to firefighter camps. Those were pretty good gigs, $15/hour, every hour, and strict adherence to HOS required.

I picked up 6,000 gallons of fish oil from someplace in eastern Virginia. That place stunk to hell!! Also picked up a tanker load of hot wax that went to some hole-in-the-wall candle place in Pa. :biggrin_25517:

I did what is called a Milatary Blue Bark load.
Meet the wife of a milatary decest that died over seas, to load and haul his personal car to her home town all under her supervision.
Not as strange as above but paid well.

It wasn't a load I was hauling, but about three months ago I was driving somewhere in the Carolinas in a driving rainstorm and noticed a bull hauler overtaking me in the hammer lane. As he was passing me I noticed that it seemed to be a double decker and looked over to see if it was pigs...

... and was staring into the eyes of a Bengal tiger looking right at me with a look that said, "Snack?"

Bee's, old log cabin from the 1700's that had been dismantled and was going to be reassembled. Most interesting was a container load of antiques from Sweden. They were going through the thing's as they were unloaded.Interesting items.

Not a load ... But carried the personal effects of a driver who passed away, back to his family. Didn't know the guy, but all of his stuff was sitting there in boxes talking to me the whole trip. A little emotional when I handed it off to his brother.

My step father drove for 45 years and he picked up a load at Beale AFB. Backed into a dock with his doors closed, was escorted to a room and told to wait. A armed officer came and got him, got in the truck with him and told only stop for traffic signals and if I say go, go! No matter what.

Took the load to Travis and reversed the process, backed into dock and taken to a room. After a bit they came and got him and told him he was free to take his truck.
