When the shuffling is done, Freight will go the way of Walmart... Yep... you and a lot of others will allways work for the "strong' which you so admire... Once this happens, guess what... your cpm will go down just like people who work for any "monopoly"

I have to agree with the statement about establishing a business in an area and not having a firm grasp on the market economies. I might want to live in the Mojave Desert, but would it be wise to start a trucking operation there? Probably not since there is no infrastructure to support my business (roads, facilities, customers). If what you are doing today is not working for you anymore, go find out what opportunities there are and adapt to the new market conditions. If you are in South Texas, look around and see what market forces are in play, what resources the area provides, and find your niche. Sometimes it just isn't obvious and sometimes you have to make drastic changes.

I read your posts and I think I have a good handle on what you were trying to get across.
The only thing is I do not necessarily agree with the region or area you decide to establish your business in. OTR is just that and if you live in a poor freight area you need to know this well before you decide to do it as your sacrifice will be limited home time especially in times like these. Tighten your belt, conserve your fuel and streamline your business. That will be the key to survival. So long as there are bad brokers there are bad drivers too. The ones who will take that .90 a mile to run, so long as someone will take it, someone will sell it. You do need to evaluate your business and get your fixed costs down to a minimum... Do you need extra chrome, do you need to run 75+??? It all comes down to managing your expenses and looking where you can increase your profits. The last phrase may not come completely from brokers as it can come from within if you can control expenses and eliminate things you can do without until the prices come up. If you are nieve enough to think they won't you need to go find another job. Everything always goes up. Sure it might dip for a while but then it goes up, if it didn't those that invest in things would be flat broke....
