Bad analogy. When you lease a car you can drive it anywhere you want. Only way they will terminate your lease is if you don't make the payments. What about when leasing a truck from a dealer? Does the finance company decide when you go home and where you drive? LOL

When leasing from a carrier you are classified as an independent contractor so you should decide when you go home and where you run. Theoretically if you want to park the truck and take six weeks off you have right to as long as you make the payments. Of course they wouldn't like that very much but from a legal standpoint they have no leg to stand on if they decided to terminate your lease. These companies are wanting to have their cake and eat it too. By classifying the L/O as an independent contractor while at the same thinking they can dictate things like where he runs and when he/she goes home.

Leasing a truck is one business model for individuals to be self-employed or a contractor (pay state and federal taxes, repair and maintence cost and other operating expenses). And Lease operators are bound by a contract, Home time is not always up to the dispatcher, but rather up to internal logistics brokers and load planners. I think the problem is freight is unpredicable and getting a load to florida is not as easy as you may think.

If you were opening a retail business, chances are you would lease the building to work out of until you made enough revenue to prove to the banks you're credit worthy, then qualify for a long term chattle mortgage and finance construction of your own building on property you argee to buy (20 year loan, title is not yours until paid in full). Just like retail businesses, Leasing a truck can be an oppurtunity, it just depends on what your professional goals are. If your goal is to own that is not the same as what JCT is selling, They are selling a perpetual lease for two reasons. One, it is profitable for them. Second, Most drivers can not qualify to purchase a new 2014 Prostar. The benefits to leasing is you get a new truck every couple of years...

Starting any business is a gamble... Same goes with leasing a truck, or even buying one thru a bank..

Leasing just offers a way for some with business skills and desire to get ahead a CHANCE with no other means
    to get ahead...

NO one is forced to sign a lease purchase contract.. Yep, plenty will fail, some without the ability or foresight to
run a business.. Some will fail thru no fault of there own, but due to outside forces or just bad luck...

That's what makes this country great, the opportunity to make it or fail... I do agree too many fail to do
their proper homework before jumping into a lease, and part of that is because trucking companies make
it too easy for them to jump-in without proper research or enough backing to offset the problems that will
    come...

I bought my trucks thru the bank and was very lucky to succeed but did have my problems too.. Any NO, you
are not totally free to do as you please even if you OWN your own truck... Fail to make your deliveries on time
or keep refusing loads and laying around and see what happens to your business...

Yes, you can go home for extended periods of time, but you better have enough funds set aside for it...

Anyone that thinks it is EASY to get rich in trucking is in for a rude surprise, but, yes, you can work it into
a pretty good living, and some do get lucky and built a nice small business..

I have seen plenty of large trucking business also fail too.. Some of the trucking companies I ran for are no longer around..
As an example, International Transport, EL Murphy, Trism Trucking and others are no longer
    around...

Hibeam didn't Trism Trucking haul oversize loads and equipment? If so I know a guy that used to be leased to them just wondering who bought them out?

The problem is MOST people fail at a lease program, and not just at JCT. Through the failures of individuals, the program SEEMS like a perpetual lease. Of course when a driver turns a truck in, for whatever the reason, they are going to make it available again. Is it profitable for them? Of course. What are they supposed to do? Sit the equipment to the side and lose potential revenue? Of course not.

The program is designed to own your own truck, more so than other companies out there. Most have a 3-5 year lease program on a new or used truck, then at the end of your lease, you're hit with an unrealistic balloon payment that most of us can't afford. So what do they do? They lease another vehicle. The program at JCT is designed for you to realistically own your own truck. They don't over charge or screw the drivers with unrealistic claims. You pay the payments each week and at the end of it, your final payment is $1.

The reason it seems undoable is not the company's fault, but rather the failure of the drivers to run their business. How many lease trucks do you see flying down the road running at their governed speed or over the posted speed limit? How many trucks do you see buying fuel at expensive places? Those decisions affect your bottom line. You can (and I have) talk to these drivers til your blue in the face about those 2 topics alone, and they still don't get it. Is that the company's fault? Of course not. But it is always easier to gripe and complain about a failure at a particular company than to admit YOUR OWN FAILURE. There is ABOLUTELY NO SHAME in failing at a business opportunity. Most of us do. Learn, make corrections, and don't repeat past mistakes. Its not rocket science, but it does require thought and planning: after all, it is YOUR business. Take care of it.

And by the way, JCT is offering 2014 Cascadias, not Pro Stars. Most of those have taken off the road.

The only problem....and the companies know it....the truck at the end of a 5 yr lease is virtually worthless

Yes, we hauled open deck trailers, flats, steps, RGN's, double drops, etc.. Some multi axle's too..

I believe they went bankrupt, must have been around 2000... I retired in 1997... International Transport was
bought out by Schneider in the mid 80's, that is the time I went to PST and they were bought by Trism... Lota
    changes back then..

BUY a truck with a down payment and see if it is worth more at the end of the contract.... Same thing... Very few
can pay cash for a Hundred thousand dollar truck... Far as I can tell, at the End of a JCT lease, +1.00, it's yours..

Got anything better in mind to offer someone trying to start a small trucking business.... If so, please share...
