If you only ran in CA and purchased all your fuel in CA then something is wrong with your calculations. You couldn't owe money because you would have paid 100% of the tax at the pump. CA doesn't have a surcharge so this can't be right.
how do you purchase your fuel

No matter what, there's always somebody in your pocket, picking it as in the yearly fee to NASTC. NASTC is no different from others who take advantage of us, in one shape or form. However it's the best card out there for discounts, unless I pump at one if our terminals. OOIDA is only good for a short period of time, other than that, it's sporadic at best.
FYI, there's plenty of posts/threads on this topic. -

If you burn 200 gallons in a state, you pay 200 gallons worth of tax at the state's tax rate. Whether you pay it at the pump, under pay it, over pay it, etc, you still pay the same amount at the end of the quarter.
This idea that somehow you're saving money because you don't 'owe' anything at the end of the quarter is idiocy. You 'owe' Gallons Burnt X State Tax. Just because Uncle Sam lets you bank some at the pump doesn't mean you're not owing it.
You fell into the same trap so many others do. You're thinking the IFTA report is 'all you owe' at the end of the quarter.Iron-Man, RedForeman and grizzly Thank this. -
If I buy fuel at 3.79 a gallon in md and buy it at 3.79 in pa my pa fuel is actually cheaper as there tax is .12 more per gallon. this is what I meant about playing the ifta game.

Thanks for the link. None of them are in my normal running route in va wv md where i spend most of my week. I could get fuel near home on it but that dosent help while out in the week.mp4694330 Thanks this. -
Some people think, though, that fueling 3.92 in PA is better than 3.79 in MD. When they're actually paying 1cpg more. Their fuel tax cost is the same. Because they have a credit at the end of the quarter doesn't mean they paid the least in diesel and fuel tax. Just that they've paid too much to the government while not employing the cheapest diesel prices.
