Basically you have to get the A permit then do whatever Ohio does for the test. That's a written test, skills test and road test.

It is my personal belief that if you only get one add on to your Class A that the Hazmat is the most valuable. But less then 10 percent of the loads are hazmat loads, so many companies will hire you without it.
The CDL A process is like getting a totally new license from your CDL B. Driving a truck that bends is a brand new experience. You will find that companies like the fact that you have experience driving a straight truck as you have had to protect your load and the general public while getting a product to market in a timely matter. So you will have an advantage over a brand new CDL A with no experience. If the B truck you were driving was a stick that needed to be double clutched you will be miles ahead. -
That depends if you wanna work for a company that hauls hazmat. Most don't require it.I've had haz mat for yrs and only needed that endorsement a couple times. But im keeping it on my CDL.

I would recommend getting hazmat.
MTNClimber and Chinatown Thank this. -
As far as written tests go do I have to retake my general knowledge and air brakes again ?
Chinatown Thanks this. -
No. You would just need to take your combination written test to get your class A permit since you have air brake on your B already.

The more endorsements you have, the more job options you will have. Having tanker/hazmat/TWIC/passport can add thousands $$$ to your annual pay.
Wild Murphy and Shaggy Thank this. -
Chinatown Thanks this.

I heard Haz Mat is the hardest test is the hardest
Shaggy Thanks this.
