I know the cheapest motels to be around $50, most of these are considered sleaze or hooker motels. These probably do not advertise like the Hilton hotels. What's the best way of finding these motels other than pure luck? LOL. I plan on doing a long drive and would prefer to stop at a city where such an affordable motel actually is located and not have to guess or look around.
is there a source for truckers to find the cheapest motels all over the country?

If it's just a overnight stay I'll use this http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/
You can get a rate around $50. Tell them you have a CDL and they'll give you a discount. They are your average 3 star motels good for overnight stays.
If I'm planning a vacation I'll use Priceline or Hotwire.
There is always Red Roof Inn and Knights Inn. On the interstate in rural areas they are survivable. The last one I stayed in I think was $35.
You can also get on google maps and zoom in a particular area and they will mark the motels. You stick your cursor on them and it'll give you a link if they have one. That's a good way to find a privately owned motel. Some of them you get a decent room at a great price.
Read the reviews!! They are worth their weight in gold.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
When you're planning to stay in a motel/hotel, before you unpack everything, make sure you check the room for bed bugs! Those nasty critters have an ability to hide anywhere, in cheap or expensive motels/hotels, but there are some great resources to help you avoid them. Here are two links to help people become more aware of what they look like and where they tend to hide:
http://bedbugregistry.com/
Plus, theUniversity of Minnesota has created a "Bed Bug Identification Card" and good website at http://www.bedbugs.umn.edu/
Needless to say, if bedbugs hop on your clothes/luggage they can easily jump off and start a new colony in your truck or back home... and it's VERY difficult to get rid of them once they've infested something... and they can have a very unpleasant bite! Always check for bed bugs before sleeping in a new bed.
