I believe it's because....when skywave propagation kicks off (skip), under certain conditions.....all 40 channels will be filled with clutter....those "other channels" tend to sometimes be less populated....so folks migrate there to get away from the riff raff.

BUT....when skip is dead, yes I agree.....no need to go there.

Me thinks FCC should have allowed the underused 220 MHz band to have been a class E CB frequency when it was petitioned....it could have given CBers a chance to not have to deal with the skip issues, they could also run MUCH smaller antennas that would be not only full length, but would meet trucker height restrictions as well, would get out farther.....but nope....couldn't do that...and so today 220 MHz is virtually not used....what a shame

They tried in the '80s, ARRL went ape**** and threw a temper tantrum, and the proposition died. And like you said, it now sits virtually unused.

honestly, i wish they would find the guy who comes on with the trumpet for hours, or slick deck willie and some of the other notorious base stations that use 19 for their personal annoyance of the channel

I agree totally! Many advantages to VHF. Now, we've got invaders on 10 and 12 Meters with their so-called "10 Meter 'amateur' radios". :biggrin_2553:That might not have happened if they'd used part of 220.:biggrin_25510:

I get what your saying.... BUT even in the best of conditions, everyone migrates to known calling channels. 6, of course, 11 or 12 and 38 LSB. Have not seen "clutter" in many years... decades in fact. Sorry to say I kinda miss it. Cursed it when it happened, miss it now that it's gone.

As for 220Mhz. Would be nice for short range CB.... Australia has something like it. Not sure if it's in the 220 or 440 range though

Never thought I'd have this in a sentence of mine.... In defense of the FCC, they really don't police CB EXCEPT when there is a complaint. Read the web about all the citations issued. Almost all start with a complaint.

And usually it is by one of "those hammers" that thinks he is an FCC poolizeman.....which gives the other Ham folks a black eye.

Yes agreed. but I do believe there are plenty of "hammers" that subscribe to liven and let live, a fact I possibly often neglect to mention...

I wouldn't say "everyone" migrates to 6 and 11....those two channels are pretty much for if you are running heat. 6 is for the power kings. 11 is where you might get your numbers called, if you have 1000 watts, and the moon, stars, planets are all aligned.

When propagation is at it's peak, all 40 channels are plagued either with users, noise or both. Not long ago we were at the top of solar cycle 24. I was able to talk over 1000 miles away on a 4 watt CB radio, no SSB either. One time I used a 102 whip, the other time it was on a Wilson 1000. I happened to luck out the few times I did it, and find someone on a channel that happened to have cleared up.

Yep....as long as you don't infringe on me, I could care less

What area are you talking about? I am in NYC and we NEVER have all 40 busy. I am curious about where CB is still that active. In the 70's through early 80's you had to fight to get heard. Different channels had their own groups.... Parties called "coffee breaks were monthly affairs. We even had channel vs. channel softball games. Now there's not enough traffic on all 40 channels here to field a single basketball team most of the time.
