Yeah, I know what you're saying. The only time my auto downshifts is when I'm applying the brake. It will downshift at 1200 rpm when braking. It will also skip gears upshifting when I'm empty or pulling a light load which is almost never. I pull a tanker so when loaded I'm loaded to the max.

Never forget that any auto will work according to the software in the computer.

2 identical trucks can have 2 different sofware versions and act completely different in shifting ,even with the same gearbox.

Right, and never forget I was only speaking about the tranny in my truck.
No need to clarify to me. I agree with your definition of a real trucker 100%!

I feel sure its difficult for those who never drove a manual transmission.

    I never had a problem downshifting or upshifting, whether it was a 5 X 3, a 4 X 4, a 5 X 4, 10 speed, 13 speed, 9 speed, 6 speed they actually shift very easy, & very safe. That is if you know what your doing.

HotH2o,it doesn't downshift on it's own when you use the Jake?

That's a good question. I really don't know the answer to that. I've never used the jakes to slow me down that much. Mainly use them to hold me back if you know what I mean. I'll try it when I go back to work tomorrow and let you know. I would imagine it would downshift with the jakes on as long as I'm in "auto" mode.

There's iShift... then there's everything else. That's pretty much the consensus among all drivers that have ever driven an automatic Volvo.
