I truly believe a retention bonus is the correct way to approach this. For myself, I tend to hang my hat wherever I land. I was happy at my last company, but came down to money and being appreciated.
Pay? An absolute must. Start off on the merit system. You get one if you've earned it, an across the board raise for everyone is kinda like public assistance, it makes people lazy and non productive.
This industry has and is a transient profession, I have always had an allegiance to the company I worked for, I run their truck and equipment as of I was paying the bill, to this day I watch the companies dime. I speak highly of my employer to other drivers, I project a positive image out here and am proud to tell anyone who wants to listen who I work for and what I do.

We are finally headed back east. Let's just say there was a major problem at the produce center in Colton this weekend and 6 team and 3 solo trucks wound up sitting for 30 hours. Dispatch finally had to put us in order of our arrival and told the 3 solo trucks to take a reset. We were number 2 on the list and got out at 3am this morning. My reset was up and Lee's was up at 10am. I hooked to my trailer checked out and drove up to Barstow. I stopped at the J at 5am to check my load and trailer and found a drive tire with only 40 pounds of air in it. I called into road service, got the ok to put it in the shop and found a 10 penny nail in it, that definitely came from the produce center in Colton that's still under construction. I was done with the tire issue at 6:30am then brought this dirty mess in to get washed.
This load is a solo load that delivers Thursday in London Ky. Tim told me to run it as a team and they will be taking it off me sometime tomorrow and give it to a solo driver. Meanwhile, after having breakfast at Peggy Sue's diner we finally hit the road again. We just switched here in Flagstaff. I'm hitting the sack. Oh, Lee, the chain smoker that he is is getting off my truck and getting into a smokers truck when we get in on Wednesday. I tried, it didn't work so everyone above my pay grade put the switch into motion. He's a good driver, listens well, takes notes, but someone else can deal with the smoking issue. The Challenger, Lonesome and gntorres61 Thank this. -
Wow, JB! Sounds like I was fortunate to get a load out of there when I did. I saw a lot of our trucks in Colton Friday morning when I left. Good for you for not putting up with the smoking. As a non-smoker myself, I know exactly what you mean. My trainer was a chain smoker and I was sick to my stomach all the time. How in the world can people do that to their lungs??? I just wish I could get my husband to quit.
The Challenger, JohnBoy and gntorres61 Thank this. -
I heard you were ahead of us. If I wasn't delayed I would've caught up to you.

JB hit the 10penny nail on the head. Retention. I was talking to Sean in recruiting about that yesterday morning. Treat it similar to the military when folks re-up...people get complacent and even bored when there is no incentive. I busted my arse and did everything I could to prove myself. Once I did they made me a trainer which is great for self-worth and affirmation, but not so much a reward. No $$$!!! We lose guys and gals every year who leave for the sake of change. They have plateaued and see no further opportunity. I had to take my case, resume in hand to the big wigs which is what an ambitious person would do...but the response of jeez we didnt know you had that background hurt a little. Better communication is the key. Instead of FREIGHT, FREIGHT, AND MORE FREIGHT....thats all upstairs hears or sees daily. Maybe the office needs teambuilding...like paintball! I would REALLY like to paint a couple people up in there and a couple of drivers too!!!

Yep, I can think of a few I'd like to paint! LOL

Just got a message from dispatch, my delivery has been changed from Thursday at 5am to tomorrow at 5am, now I have to work the rest of the day. If I drive straight through I'll be there at 3:30am.
