Hi everyone.
49, single, no kids (that I know of), and have been considering driving. Right now I am a butcher and am sick of it. I have looked at a school in my area and only one as it is the closest by many miles. Now I can go through all the bull of getting financial aid, taking out a student loan, and trying to switch my schedule around to accommodate school or, i can get in with one of the companies that trains you from the get go. Yes, I know you have to commit to them for a year or so. But my plan would be to stay for a year or so, then switch to someplace local where I am not out for weeks at a time. My thought is that I get my license, get trained, and get paid. Yes, not much the first year but I would get the training for free, so to speak.
I have spoken to a several local companies and they suggest I go OTR for a year and then I would be in demand.
Anyone have a thought on my plan?
Thanks!

I would be real careful about letting any company own you for a year,or more.
Theres several stories of drivers getting poor miles, and never getting home doing that.
If you can pay/borrow the money, then I would do that.
You can always sign on with a company that will reimburse you for school to help cover
your loan payment.
Its just my 2 cents, and Im sure there are drivers that have, and do go that route.
Welcome, and hope it goes well for you70s_driver Thanks this. -
hi Morpheus, I'm in same boat.I'm in upstate ny and the only ones any good 1hr away is sage.I decided to go out of state to a com col in iowa. Its a lot longer10-15wks but I could finance it with student loan.6 month deferred and a lot of companies will reimburse it. Check it out ,iowa central community coledge. they pay youre bus and housing is $500 tacked on to bill. where are you at?

In all fairness, it is possible to get into a position without a year of OTR. Having your year in, is a massive/huge help. It really opens a lot of doors.

Before I welcome you to trucking, how much money do you want to make? I have noticed that people are settling for less and less money as they enter this PROFESSION. It seems that newbies are too quick to except such little salary. I think you should get a company, like Swift or even CR England to hire and train you. And then, start organizing a Union with in the company. I am sure the Teamsters would help. The worst that could happen is that you get fired and you can take your company paid training to some other company. Anyone making less then $60,000 per year is hurting this industry. I find I am getting radical in my old age.

I'd never go to a company sponsored CDL program unless it was my absolute last option.

If possible, don't commit to any company for your cdl. Try to remain "free" of obligations like that. But if that is the very best option for you, then go for it.
Most companies will reimburse your cdl school tuition, if you pay for your school.70s_driver Thanks this. -
They, "CDL MILLS" will go after your credit and report the unpaid amount. One of our drivers has to fix his credit, after leaving before his 24 months.
But...if your trucking, your credits probably gonna end up garbage anyway
