The walmart driver who crashed his truck said he hadn't slept in 24 hours, so basically he was "tired". Here's a thought for you guys; instead of making that mandatory break a measly 30 minute, why not extend it to at least, minimum, of 1 hour. Let's be honest here, i can't even take a dump in 30 minutes, how do you expect me to relax in that time. If anything, it just makes us drivers stress more because we have to hurry more- to find that parking spot, to hurry taking a dump, to hurry eating our meals, or to hurry on the fuel islands. Most drivers just drive around the fuel islands until their 30 minutes is up because it's more efficient, but this can be more stressful because we are constantly checking to see if anyone is behind us to move forward. We can't do anything in 30 minutes. But i bet if you extend it to an hour, a lot of drivers will be more happy.
Here's a suggestion to the DOT

No one said it was a 30 minute maximum break.

No proof what so ever the driver was up for 24 hrs except what he said/she said sort of thing. The walmart is denying he was up that long.Yes he may have been tired maybe because he was getting down to being done for the night and just wanted to hurry up and get his shift over with.Dragonmeteor no one is stopping you from taking an hr brk if you choose, why should all the drivers be subject to that because of the ones that prefer that over the 30 minute brk?????????.Drivers shouldn't be forced to take a break period during their shift. It should be up to the driver. Many can run fine without a break. When you think about it drivers get way more then a half hr brk everyday anyway from driving like at customers stopping at trk stops ect ect.

Less regulation not more. I do not need no gooberment hack agency telling me when I need rest or regulating how long I can take to relieve myself.
If one finds themselves rushing to fit in time to use the restroom, or cruising the parking lots to fulfill their required break time, perhaps the problem lies not in the regulation, but rather in their ability to trip plan.
We work strange, and, more often than not long hours (or they can sometimes seem long). Remember, this isn't a race, its a lifestyle. If you are constantly running to keep up, you wont last.fuzzeymateo, semi retired semi driver, lonewolf4ad and 9 others Thank this. -
Hell if I'd have had an attorney like the OP when I got divorced I'd have ended up owing my ex 200k instead of 100k
these new rules have done nothing but cost me money. Sounds like the OP needs to find a new career if he can't figure it out or if it's that stressful for himpattyj, SHO-TYME, lonewolf4ad and 1 other person Thank this. -
The Walmart drivers logs probably are legal. I've done that many times; run out the 14 hrs. work day, then find it impossible to sleep before having to drive again. The worst thing the politicians could have done is implement a 14 hr. window and not allowing us to break that up with sleeper berth time and extending the 14 hr. work period. The HOS as they stand today would be good for an office worker or factory worker, but not for OTR driving. The way the HOS is now, is like a street wino deciding the schedule for an astronauts trip to Mars.

Here you are tired, here you are not. How about a driver work a normal 40-50 hour work week and make the same money instead of trying to find the fine line of exhaustion?
I know, I'm only dreaming!
It's all about controlling shipping costs. Even if it means a few lives. They could fix these problems tomorrow if they wanted to. But they don't want to pay for it in the stores.
If you want to talk about the accident there is a huge thread down in the Trucking Accidents forum. I'm leaving this here so you all can discuss HOS. -
2. How is wasting fuel driving around a parking lot for 30 minutes more efficient?
3. As I highlighted in that thread. We don't need more requirements, we need a culture change. We need to train drivers so that when they are tired, they speak up and say so. There needs to be a paradigm shift in the way professional drivers are paid as chasing miles is simply not the safest way to do so anymore.

Thanks for the suggestion but stop trying to put ideas into this crazy, obsessed woman's head.
She's been a disaster already and none of her rules new or old are going to make anymore difference.
One accident, that hits the networks inc NPR and all hallelujah breaks loose.
We are heavily regulated already with a 10 hr break. What more do they want. Good grief!!! 30 min break...for what?? Are they so stupid that they think that rule will prevent accidents..? Most of us were taking breaks anyway.
The 34 hr reset was a great idea when it was introduced but , oh no, that woman had to fool with it. And for what reason other than she's on her little power trip.
Do they want to monitor our home life too......making sure we are getting the required sleep.
They are potentially going to invade my privacy with this sleep apnea test, IMHO. To me that's another way of sticking their noses into my private affairs, when I'm sleeping. Sleep time is OFF DUTY may I remind those folks.
What i do OFF DUTY is none of their business.
And there's absolutely no evidence that sleep apnea causes any kind of accident, in any case. Just an illusion dreamed by an individual who has a vendetta against us too.
Now we have a knee jerk reaction to this Walmart tragedy, only because a celebrity was involved.
Nothing has been said or mentioned about the other 8 fatalities involving Walmart drivers in the past 3 yrs. guess those don't count.
I can see it now. That old witch is breathing a sigh of relief now and telling all those clowns in Washington
" See, I told you so, we can't trust those horrible, irresponsible truck drivers. How can you turn back the HOS regs now"
I can bet that's what's going on right now behind the green door. Pantie-power rules and she's gonna get her way.
We will just have to suck it up and hope she eventually disappears.
But right now I think we can kiss goodbye to those chuckleheads making any changes except retain the status quo.
They care more about what the ignorant public thinks than listen to us. Public votes count more than sensible thought.70s_driver Thanks this. -
Chasing miles has never been the safest way to make money and its getting worse.Considering what companies pay,I will not bust my ### to get a load delivered only for the next pre load assignment.I will not do any special favors for my dispatcher unless it fits in with my hos and im not tired.I've been in this game long enough.I know how they play. This lady don't play their games.Just isn't worth it,especially now.
