51? You have at least 14 good years ahead of you if you have your health. You have the maturity level the young drivers don't have. Woman make great drivers. They are less aggressive as far as doing stupid stuff driving and handle the stress much better than some males you see out there.

If you want change then trucking is a definite change. You don't have to marry another trucker but you do have to marry the job and lifestyle to really enjoy what it has to offer and succeed. You see everything and meet a whole bunch of good people.

Make sure the company you hire on with will be pet friendly. Go sell yourself.

I don't do drugs of any kind. Where do they put the most importance in their screenings?

Absolutely. I have posted numerous times in different threads here about being older and then being hired. I entered truck school at the age of 62 after having been self-employed for 28 years. I was hired and working the week I left school. I had 3 offers before I left school. I'm on my second job now and have had more than 40 offers from various companies (good and bad) over the past year and a half. Of course, I'm always corresponding and looking for that perfect job so I get offers...but you get the point.

If you look at the labor statistics you would realize that drivers are and will be in great demand for the next few years while starting salaries are rising. If you happen to be without a criminal record, without a bad driving record, have a hazmat or other endorsement, have a TWIC card, are healthy with a current DOT card, etc.....you increase your chances of being hired because the pool of drivers that don't have disqualifying personal problems or do have those extra certifications I mention are more and more difficult to find.

Something I have discovered is that my age is actually an asset in this industry. Most employers have the perception that with age comes intelligence, dependability, trust, diligence, and more. Judging from the posts we see here we know that's not necessarily true-- but I'm talking about the general public perception gives you an advantage. ;-)

I would add that I think being a woman may be and advantage in this male-dominated industry. I always find myself admiring women who dare to break into driving the big rigs. Whenever I see them out on the roads I smile to myself and silently wish them the best.

Blood Pressure, diabetes, agility, sight, hearing, heart conditions, alcohol/drug abuse, just mostly the basic stuff. If youre in pretty good health, you shouldn't have a problem.

If it comes down to hiring a 51 year old versus a 25 year old, they will hire the 51 year old every, single, time.
