Once you have 6 months of exp there are a lot of options. I went to Gordon after 6 months, 33 cents a mile with reefer, huge jump in take home pay.

I used my tax refund to pay off the tuition loan from them. They have a fake law firm that will send you nasty letters and phone calls though.

Fed-Ex Freight pays very well, my friend works for one of the terminals in Maine and he makes right around $100k/yr hauling doubles overnight to Newburgh, NY... It's about 600 miles round trip, but he makes seriously around $350-400 a night.

You forgot to mention he probably works 12-14 hours a night and pushes that 70 hours every week!

Is that such a surprise to work around 65 hours a week? Get used to it kid. That is pretty much the standard number of hours that MOST truck drivers run each week.

Don't forget, most drivers complain about running out of hours. 70 hrs. is a piece of cake for most drivers, otherwise they would find another line of work.

Would it perhaps be much easier on the individual driver if the law was amended as such?

    1) 14 hour workday - 7 days a week - total of 98 hours a week

    2) 11 hours drive time - 7 days a week - total of 77 hours a week

    3) 10 hours down time - 7 days a week - total of 70 hours a week

Also, totally get rid of the 34 hour reset altogether, along with the mandatory 30 minute break in one's initial 8 hours. Grown adults know when they need to eat, sleep, shave, shower, and @#%&. The D.O.T. does NOT have to mandate this to grown adults.

There should be NO mandatory nap time & the 34 hr. reset should occur anytime there's 34 straight hours off.

There are only 168 hours in 7 Days

The law mandates every driver must have 10 HR off per day,

That leaves 98 hours to work.

CDL Class A licence restricts drving to no more than 11 hours per day or 70 hours per 8 days.

The average time per day to work in 8 days is 8.75 hours per day. A driver can work 30-60-90 or more days consecutively. There is no law preventing him from working 365 days a year as long as he can legally maintain a record of duty status.

Look at the bigger picture! Which is more important, time or money. We should all strive to balance work and play. Trucking is not fun, it's work.
