OP I sent you a Private Message about local Chicago work. But you may not be able to see it until you have 10 posts or so.

let me know if you get it.

Yeah I walked out of Swift orientation when they forced me to share a hotel room with a stranger. No thanks. Bye bye.

Hi unknown, I think you did ok as well. Remember, those orientations are for people that are starting out with nothing, and you are overqualified for that job, just by the mere fact, you have your CDL and did work as a driver already. Chicago CL had almost 300 transport postings the other day, I'm sure you'll be able to find something, and not have to go through that stuff. Good luck.

When I went through orientation they made a major announcement prior to commencing drug testing. We were going to take a 15 minute break. Anyone that didn't want to take the drug test should leave before the break and it won't get reported as a refusal to take a drug test, which is essentially a failed drug test. If you came back after that break and THEN walked out, that will count as a refusal.

Swift DOES have local jobs. However, you need to complete the training process and MAY need to run OTR for a few months before landing one of those gigs. After going solo you talk to your driver manager about new job opportunities, and they come over the Qualcomm all the time as well. There are local day cab jobs and some terminals run relays, both of which are home daily. There are also dedicated accounts which can be local or regional and get you home at least weekly.

They don't just hand out those jobs to new drivers. For one thing you have to demonstrate excellent on time percentage and a work ethic. They aren't going to blow a million dollar account because they put a bunch of fresh new drivers on it, they are only going to put drivers in there that they know can take care of business.

On the other hand I've got friends at the Jurupa Valley terminal that pretty much started out running day cab, coming to Swift with a couple year's experience. Anyone coming to Swift without prior experience WILL need to go through the process of running OTR, establishing a good track record, then networking to get the job you want.

They were just trying to prepare you for the time you would be spending in a truck with a driver trainer that would be a stranger for you! Not much difference there.

And that stranger is now driving the hotel at highway, in stop and go city traffic, speeds, playing the radio, pulling air brakes at the fuel island, docks, etc...
