Mornin' everyone. Well, where to begin? Was a Deputy Sheriff in FL for 15 years and have left that nonsense. Flounder'd for a few years until I decided to get into driving a truck for a living. I start my second week at Roadmaster on Monday. First experience in a truck was last Friday and my Lord, what an experience. Instructor sure was right when he said "Its you car guys that are the worst because I have to break you of your bad habits." Couldn't have been more right.
First stint behind the wheel was "ok", I give myself a grade of C for the day. By the second stint behind the wheel on the same day I was much better. I tell ya, at 46 yrs old and the way you have to drive these things is work. Saturday morning my left felt like I had been doing one legged squats. Haaaaaaa. (Flame on,,,,,here it comes. Haaaaaa)

Will add, my knees are complete junk. Meniscus in both are full of arthritis, but I think I'll survive. Im a little more tough than smart.

I KNOW I have a lot to learn. I AM NOT Gods gift to trucking. I have a conditional offer of employment with Covenant waiting on me and just have to get through the next two weeks of school.

They teach you to enjoy pain in enforcement? j/k

We have a few others who admit to once being LEOs and they mostly get along just fine.

    BTW, Welcome to TTR.

Welcome to the madness. I know they probably are teaching you to double clutch. Yeah, thats hard on a bad knee, i know for sure. But later you'll learn to float the gears; to shift without touching the clutch and your knee will thank you.

I start at Roadmasters on 11/24 myself. Although I've had my class B since 1988. Need to upgrade to class A. I too have a pre-hire letter from a reputable company here in the Salt Lake area. I also retired from a law enforcement agency. You're right! Had enough of that nonsense. Those jobs kind of suck all the positive life out of you. Looking forward to getting out there on the open road.

Thanks everyone. Long term goal is to get my butt to the Bakken. Been doing research on it for about a year now. I was a "trainer" (FTO) as a deputy, so I will definitely understand the frustration of being with a greenhorn. I hope I do my trainer or trainers proud, keep my mouth shut and learn as much as possible. It's gonna be hell being away from my kids, but divorce and other issues have pushed me to this decision. I think I will be fine. I love driving, love just roaming along. Never been one for "roots" per-se.

Good luck to you in driving school. Your first couple of times in the truck will be a little rough but you will get the hang of it to pass the CDL test.

I forgot to mention this.....Get every endorsement on your license like HAZMAT, Doubles/Triples, Tanker, and a TWIC card. Those endorsement will help you land some of the better paying jobs. Get them done while in trucking school because afterwords you won't have time.

Look around and see if there are any LTL's hiring in your area. With the driver shortage you may not have to do the OTR route. LTL pays very well.
