I've done in intermodal in Chicago the last 4 years, stopped a few months ago but here's a cheat sheet to the yards did go to often...

Norfolk southern 47th st. - easy to get to just take Dan Ryan to 47th west and yard is at after very first viaduct. Can also get there coming from as far as Cicero Avenue without worry of low clearance or other restrictions. When you out gate it's a little more hairy. Due to construction (until next month last I heard) you are forced to go south on 51st. There are truck detours but the fastest way back to the Dan Ryan is to go all the way to Ashland Ave go south to 59th back east to 90/94. Could also take Ashland north and follow detours but it's a lot of tight (do-able) turns.

NS 63rd - also easy take 90/94E to 63rd west yard comes up after a mile or two from 90/94 west there's no 63rd exit you can take 59th St exit and turn around is the easiest way. When you out gate at 63rd it spits you back the same way.

NS 79th - yard entrance on western ave. If coming in on 90/94 take 59th St exit go west to western Ave go south it'll be on the right. LOW CLEARANCE ON 79th east of western.

NS 103rd Calumet - east off bishop Ford highway on 103rd, first light make a right then a quick left.

Union Pacific Global 1 - on western ave, from the south take I55 exit damen go north to blue island ave go west to western go north, yard will be on the right after a viaduct. From the north take I290 to Western go south yard will be on the left. When you exit the yard you will end up coming up to Ashland ave. Turn left to go to 290, right to go to 55.

UP Global 2 Northlake (Proviso) - take 290 west To lake st east, entrance to yard (and other warehouses) on the right when you go under a viaduct. When outgated you can go back you turn right if you want 294 NORTH. If you want 294 south or 290 turn right on Lake st, left at first light (beware of cop who likes to drag you to a nearby scale) left again at first light (64) ramps for the highway will be on the right.

UP global 4 Joliet - not really Chicago but this is a very popular yard now it's near the Chicagoland speedway, the locals prefer you take I55 to arsenal Rd to get there but most who come from Chicago take 80 to 53 south to laraway rd.

UP Mopac/Dolton - Yard in Dolton enter on Indiana Ave north of Sibley. Sibley has an exit for 94 or 57

UP canal st - this yard is used more for storage as far as I know, you can get there by taking 55 to cermak go east, left on archer left on canal.

BNSF Corwith - 2 gates, large one on kedzie ave, accessible from 55 south. Smaller one take I55 to pulaski go south, second light (dunkin donuts on corner) turn left, turn right at end of the Rd follow to gate.

BNSF Cicero/Ogden - I55 to Cicero ave go north left at Ogden ave connector left on Ogden ramp will be on the right. There is another gate on 26th St as well, if instead of turning left on Ogden you can go right then first light make left and it will wind around to the other side if the yard. If you're bobtail you can take Ogden past the first main ramp and there are a couple bobtail lanes.

BNSF willow springs - directly next to the UPS cach facility, you can get there easy from 294 to willow springs exit or take 55 to Lagrange north, first light take a right, next light go right and that road leads directly to the yard

CN Harvey - Can take 94 or 57 or 294 exit at 159th (go west from 94) take it to center street go south yard will be on the right. If you take 80/94 exit Halsted north, you can turn left on 167th (burger king on corner) but last I was there you'd see a pot hole minefield. You can instead turn left one light sooner on 171st that will wind around to center st, turn right and yard will be on the left.

NS47th - the out gate at 51st is now open to 90/94 - Dan Ryan Expwy but now you can't go west on 51st.

NS63rd - now outgates you on 62nd. Go east on 62nd to T (State St), either go north to 59th then west or go south to 67th then west.

Brings back memories of going in and out of all those yards. I ran intermodal for about 10yrs. Can you still run 79th st back west towards I55 out off N/S landers yard. Is the CSX yard on I think 63rd still open. I have been thinking about go to JB Intermodal.

Yup, 79th west from Western is good the whole way. Are you asking about the old Conrail on 63rd (east of the Dan Ryan, just past that long viaduct)? It is a N/S now and yes it is still open. There are only two CSXs I am familiar with, one in Bedford Park on 71st (east of Harlem) and on 59th Chicago (just east of Western).

CSX 59TH st is the one I was thinking of. I remember going to the old conrail yards and the bullet holes in the glass of the buildings. CSX also use to have a small yard just east of western ave on 79th st just before the low bridge.
