starting in a few days, afraid I'll be bored too soon

Really? You post you get bored by noon!
What the hell are you going to do behind the wheel for 11 hours?
In the same little truck cab for days at a time?

It kills me all these people jump to trucking thinking easy job and a big paycheck!
Did you ever consider other types of work?

WHY did you pick truck driving in the first place? Was it to "travel and see the country"?
All well and good for the first few trips!

It sounds like a recruiter talked you into this and now you are having second thoughts.
Then you come on a TRUCKING forum and ask about getting bored doing the same work......well YOU are going to get bored.

Why would boredom be a fear?....you just deal with it.

 

When I was at kb,I picked up an empty take it to Denison,Iowa pick up a load of Swingen meat take back to Tyson and start my second round 3 times a day in a 57 mph trk up and down hills.Very boring and very hard on the legs because the trks had no power due to them being ungodly slow.Did that for 2 yrs same thing day in day out.You do need the motivation if your goal is to succeed.Im thinken about getting back out there local driving that is because now my dad needs assistance getting around so going OTR is out of the question.

 

I can understand where North_easy is coming from. I can not stand factory work, the most boring & repetitive thing you can do IMO however I barely noticed we worked 40hrs straight out in the oilfields then I had to DRIVE 2 hrs back to the shop in a barely non-cdl type truck and had no problem making it back safely with 3 others in the truck with me and had their lives in my hands and others on the road.(which they would always let me drive cause I was the safest driver in the group).

I also had to travel 3 times between MI & ND in 4-5 days, 20hrs straight non-stop each way, never stopped other than to get more fuel and keep going. Was perfectly aware and cautious the whole time. Especially when those god awful FedEx and & Wal-Mart drivers were around HOLY CRAP they suck!

So what I mean is, you can get bored with one line of work and enjoy another even if they are both repetitive in their own regards. One mans trash is another mans treasure, etc. If you don't like OTR go local or drive a CDL-B vehicle like a dump, garbage truck, etc all good paying jobs.

 

Get the trainer crap after 6 months experience out of your head man. You can't teach/train what you don't know.

 

agreed, Trainers should probably have at least minimum 2-3 years under their belt, otherwise you end up with the blind leading the blind.

 

If you really love to drive, then go ahead with trucking school
If you're only looking at the $$$$$, then forgetaboutit!

Driving across some of the western states can seem endless...its something like 800 miles from one end of Texas to the other on I-10. That's like driving from NYC to Chicago. So...you'd better really like to drive.

Or the other daily extreme...running up and down the east coast. LOTS of traffic, more traffic, crowded roads that were never intended to handle vehicles longer than an old 38' city bus, weird local traffic/truck laws, more idiots driving that are busy on their cell phones than you can count and everyone trying to pass Mr Nasty trucker..that's you!

We won't even get into route planning or how to find a parking space for an 80' rig when more and more places won't let you park. Same mentality as the people who buy a house next to a freeway or airport and then complain about all the noise.

Personally, I love boring days. That means I got to the shipper and was loaded on time, got to the consignee with no problems, detours, minimum construction zones and on time, and got unloaded quickly. No problems.

Ok, I'm done now. My finger is tired from typing on my phone.
Take care. Drive safe and even if you're bored, please watch out for me and my few million or so biker buddies. Getting run over by anything hurts. And we don't have 18 wheels to keep us off the pavement... only two.

 

Umm... North have you considered that perhaps you have more to offer whatever you're currently doing.

IOW... I was never bored because I was never boring.
Everyday above ground is a great day and a chance for you to better yourself. Be it data entry or trucking.

My two cents? Work in yourself before you work on a truck. Just food for thought.

 

Trainer at six months, lol. I have to assume that's $1,200/week gross...not net/take home. No way in hell a company is paying someone with six months experience that much money to be a "trainer."
