Yeah, that alone sounds terrifying! You being the driver needs to be safe, you don't want the coil you are hauling the end up in your bunk.
Would you use 5 chains for securement (sp?) on every coil? or just coils over a certain weight?
Have you hauled multiple "suicide" coils?
like for example 5 coils, approx. 8,000 each. How many chains, etc would you use for a load like that?
Thank you!

ok it depends on qty, weight, how loaded.
5 coils eye to the sky (typiclly strap only) x-strap the front/rear single for the middle 3
2 Suicide ~20k each 5 chains each
2 Shotgun coils 5 chains each~20k each -
Thank you, that helps! I am told to tell our drivers certain load procedures, however I know that the truckers know what they are talking about.
Do you ever haul steel tubing / pipe or bars?
Also any advise for me as a dispatcher? Any tips on conversing with drivers and trying to help them? -
steel pipe, yes.
chain(if allowed by customer) if not strap every other layer and winch that Fer TIGHT -
thank you!

Never seen an eye to the sky weigh 20k. G7. 3/8 chain WLL of 6600, but most trailers I've seen have a WLL of 5000 lbs for stake pockets and spools.
40000 lb coil/2=20000/5000=4 points of securement. However, regs require g force pull of 50% front and 80% rear also. So that's 20000/.5 and 20000/.8Lucar Thanks this. -
You won't have a choice how they are loaded. Chances are it will be suicide loaded. You will need coil racks and 6 chains.

Lots of disagreement here lol. For suicide coils allow 9000 lbs per chain. 3 is sufficient for a 20000 lb coil. 5 is fine for a 40000. Do not cross them over each other. You do not need a strap/chain over the topic a suicide loaded coil. For shotgun use the same math but you can cross over the last one or two. Always put a strap/chain over the top. Skidded coils need to be chained in an x pattern with a trip chain at the bottom of the coil pulling rearward. Math is the same. When loading multiple Skidded coils load them touching each other or you'll need a trip chain for each skid. On the last one put a trip chain pulling forward. That will get you started lol. Good luck.
ChevyCam, jamespmack and Fatboy42 Thank this. -
If you do load up suicide drive as little as possible then tighten the chains. They seem to get loose quick. If there's room in the lot drive around and hit some bumps then tighten up.

Eye to sky not secured correctly, hard brake to avoid a car. Driver was only travelling at 35 mph.
