Been really thinking about flatbeds, but you just about have me convinced to try tankers instead :). Maybe I'll do the flats for the first year. try something else the second.

If thinking flats, give Melton truck lines a call, they are a great bunch to work for and with, I have personal experience with them,

If your just looking for opinions, tank work is about the best driving job out there. If you can that's where I would start with Schneider bulk or someone. Once you get a few years under your belt you can land a local job if that's what you want. With gasoline and oil your very limited to the number of other people you have to deal with during loading and unloading which was my favorite part.

There's some good coast to coast flatbed companies out there.

    System Transport - Tripac APU
Pride Transport - XM radio, 20" satellite TV, refrigerator
    Halvor Lines
    Jones Bros. Trucking
    Waggoners Trucking Co.

Attend a 160 hr. CDL school. A few days before school starts, submit job applications. Don't wait until graduation. This will give you time to sift through the job offers and pick the one you like best. Ignore "experience required" on any website and apply anyway.

    Enjoy your new career.

I did office work for 10 years talking on pbone in customer service. Everyday my cubicle faced the wimdow, and everyday I saw trucks go by and wished that was me. It is now. Its 10:33 now. While everyone else is sitting in an offoce boring their buts off Im getting ready to eat, just had a shower and then Im free till tomorrow morning to do what I want.

Yeah I couldn't deal with seeing the same stuff everyday. That's why I'm an OTR driver.
Got to go to the Mall of America, Vegas.. see beautiful mountains, only by being OTR made all that possible.
Then again I'm single with no kids and don't have to deal with having to come home just so my wife can take my paycheck lol.

Do you really think the 160 hour course would make much more of a difference? I'm looking at a 3 week course now because I can cover 2 weeks of it under my vacation time. If I thought that it would make a significant difference then I wouldn't mind at all.

How about companies who hire tanker drivers, do you know a list of good companies for that?

When I retired out of the Navy, I turned down a $250.00 a day ocean towing tugboat job as a engineer. I had already took & passed the 10,000 HP and under exam. I went trucking instead.............go figure! I had been to 53 countries, and had only seen 13 states during my time in the Navy. I wanted to see what else there was.

All my friends told me that I was a ##'n idiot for going trucking.

I have no regrets. I miss all the good people I met out on the road, and still wonder how they are all doing today.

If you had prior experience, then you might get away with a short course, most companies that I know of want at least the 160 hour course for their new hires without experience.
