Some of them really go thru a truck with a fine tooth comb, inside and out, never had one use use a flat or philips screwdriver though. I went to one base that was really lax security wise.

I will remember this lesson in the future,,, I would never mail it home, I don't go home enough. But a gun shop is a good idea and maybe a fellow driver who will be at the local truck stop for a while. I think calling the local Police dept would be the best idea for next time. I will give an update to this thread when I try it next time I go on a base. BTW,,,I don't mind learning lessons...

Well SheepDog, you're not alone, tho the place of incident & years were quite different.
Same thing happened to me trying to get into Angola Prison, many years ago.
Luckily, back then, (way pre-911) it was dealt with in a much easier fashion.

Calling the police would be the last thing I tried. If you carry a firearm, you have to have common sense. Sheepdog could have simply rented a hotel room and left the weapon there while he delivered. There are many options if you think about it, and if you carry a firearm OTR, you should be thinking about it.

I am really glad that you got the load off Sheepdog. If you are ever in Norfolk, and run into a problem....gimme a holler! And.....you are right about being treated fairly. The DOD cops could have arrested you right there on the spot.

Another thing that wasn't mentioned, or I may have missed.........you can always check the gun in at a local FFL gun shop for a few bucks while you are in areas of concern.

    SheepDog Thanks this.

Years ago I was a bike messenger and had to deliver to all sorts of court houses, government buildings etc. and would have to stash my leatherman places because of the blade. If you know you're coming right back a trash barrel is an excellent place to stash something for a short period of time.

You cannot mail a hand gun to yourself. It has to go from FFL to FFL. The only exceptions are antique firearms that fall into certain categories.
