Could be. The main benefit to the mileage interval is that most drivers cannot detect the gradual decrease in performance well enough to recognize a problem. Is waiting until you hear valve train noise or have a burned valve really worth it? Going to a known good mechanic goes along way toward reducing that risk versus dropping into any random shop for an overhead. Or any other service for that matter.

From a business standpoint, I gain a tenth or two mpg with an overhead adjustment. In the time it takes for the next one to come up, the ROI money-wise is a wash. It's all upside with improved reliability and worse things avoided.

That's why you TRACK your fuel economy, and pull regular oil samples on a truck you OWN. The company guys are the ones guessin' and not carin'.

This is a link to Polaris Labs FAQ page. If you scroll down a bit, there's some words about test results and severity levels. Among other contaminants, soot is mentioned.

Who makes OPS' filters? I'm out and am just wondering if I can order them directly from whomever actually manufacturers them...

Yeah, but Detroit's specs call for the replacement of oil at levels Polaris only flags as "1" (2.5% fuel dilution, 3% soot). If I'm going to ease into longer maintenance intervals, I'll stick within Detroit's parameters...

Speaking of oil, do any of you have experience with Amsoil? If so, did you also install an Amsoil filter system?

The reason I ask is my brother installed the filter system and has extended his oil changes considerably. We talked with an O/O of a 1996 KW (forget the model) that installed the system on his truck and hadn't changed oil in a year, although he took regular oil samples for analysis. He said the improvement in engine wear (noted by the oil analysis) was remarkable.

That's exactly where they'd expect you to change it. Any higher severity level, and they'd be calling you immediately to discuss the situation- with a recommendation on whether you could take it to your mechanic or you should visit the nearest service center.

Maybe you ought to investigate how all this works a bit further... like a call to Polaris to discuss what their customer service entails.

Transmission fluid change and 2 differentials fluid change for 2011 Prostar - $600 labor (4hrs) + $200 (xmiss) $200 (2diff) synthetic = $1100 (w tax) vs TA $400... is it magic fluid like Jack's beanstalk beans for this $700 cost differential?

A high intelligence is on this thread so posed it here.

Lesson of the day: Don't dally when opening the doors on a truckload of dry ice (the rush of super cold displaced air about knocked me on my ###)

Must have been infused with microblue?

Lol....Dry ice uses up oxygen. Mostly nitrogen in there. It can give you a rush.
