common knowledge, combination, and airbrakes are the test you "have" to take. if you dont get the airbrake endorsement, you'll be restricted which means you wont drive semi combo's since they air airbrakes. same with taking driving test with auto... restricted to automatics only. if you're confident enough, take test for all the endorsents at once....same price. some reefer loads are hazmat. having all your endorsement will be better for you in the longrun. gives you more option on where to work. good luck. i'm not sure on age requirements, so hopefully someone else more knowledgable than me can give you that info

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I have few more questions. I plan on going to the DMV sometime next month to take my written test. Been holding it off do to financial problems.
1.) What paperworks or documents do I need to have?
2.) Should I get my physical done before I go get my permit?
3.) Should I get hazmat and tankers or should I wait until I'm 21? Will I even be allowed to get those or is there a age restriction? If so, will those restrictions be taken off for free (along with the intrastate), once I turn 21?
Also, I've been struggling with the book. I'm not much of a reader (especially if I have to jump from one page to another and back and forth), but I've watched tons of PTI videos on YouTube. Of course every truck and videos are different.
So with that being said, I would like to know what are the major key points I must demonstrate to the instructor when doing the outside portion of the PTI; mainly the truck and its parts? I do not think I will be able to remember everything all at once (especially with such pressure), so please list the ones that I must know about in order to get a passing score?
Keep an eye out for another thread regarding the practice test. Should be up within 24 hours.
Thank you. -
I've recently acquired my CA CDL
-Did my Medical exam before applying to DMV
-Read DMV CDL manual twice and took test
General knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles and Passenger Endorsement ( Failed Combination Vehicles test and took it again right away and passed it 2nd time)
- Attended Interestate 215 trucking school on weekends for a month and took driving test (passed 1st time)
- Attended Dootson School of trucking for a couple of weekends to take Passenger Endorsement (passed 1st time)
All I can tell you is all about how bad do you want it. Schools would prepare you and direct you on how to pass the tests. One thing is for sure you have to study on your own besides the hours of practice that you do while on Schools.
Lots of hours reading CDL manual, downloaded and bought CA CDL app on to my cell, and watched youtube videos over and over again.
