Most banks are much stricter now with business accounts so you may have to show legal LLC or other documents. In the past all you had to do was show a letter head on an invoice that you create.

Otherwise, you'd have to have paid exactly the tax due via all your purchases at the pump, a nearly impossible task given all the variables. You could come close, but the effort would be pointless and likely end up costing you more due to favoring that strategy versus lowest net price (pre-IFTA price). Depending on what state that lowest net price is for you, it would likely result in a refund or amount due, since you would have purchased more fuel in the low net cost state and used a bunch in other states that probably tax more or less than the one you purchased the fuel at.double yellow Thanks this. -
understand that what you pay is determined by fuel mileage and miles per state. Where you buy fuel has nothing to do with your total "bill".
The amount you pay or get refunded each quarter is just settling up if you overpaid or underpaid. I don't know why everyone focuses on that amount, it doesn't matter, if you get some back that just means you overpaid, if you owe then you underpaid, you didn't win the lotto if they send you money, it's your money being refunded.
All you can really do is consider the fuel tax when purchasing fuel, and perhaps consider the tax per state when you are figuring trip expenses, or comparing one route to another.csmith1281, bbechtel16, tsavory and 1 other person Thank this. -
Fueling at the lowest "less IFTA" price hasn't been that out of line for me. I had a $2 refund, paid $24, & just had an $18 refund...
The states I do most of my fueling in are CA, WY, IL, IA, & SC with MO, TN, OK, & TX being cheap sometimes as well. Whether I owe or get a refund mostly depends on how much I bought in IL & CA but I'd be just as happy if I found a cheap untaxed indian reservation & wound up oweing $700 each quarter.csmith1281 and tsavory Thank this. -
Nothing like getting run around lol. My bank says I need an assumed business certificate.

One way would be to figure out what your MPG's are. Say 6 miles per gallon. Purchase 100 gallons in the state and only run 600 miles in that quarter and boom you have a balance of zero on your IFTA. Or purchase 1000 gallons and run 6000 miles in the quarter in that state. Or purchase 10,000 gallons and drive 60,000 miles in that state in the quarter - all equals out to a zero IFTA.

By having this filed it also gives you clear legal ground if someone else were to start a trucking company with the same name. Now, without the dba you could probably still prove you had been using the name and eventually make them stop, but with the dba filed it's a bit more cut and dry.csmith1281, paul_4lp, tsavory and 3 others Thank this. -
Hell I don't even want a name lol. I'm just putting my last name so it be. Smith trucking company. I'm leasing to a carrier not running my own authority.
#edit. I'm not sure if it's just me but this stuff is confusing lol. If it wasn't for This thread I'll be lost. Maybe double yellow coups do stuff on taxes? How to file n pay em. -
being just a dumb company driver
and before that leasing with Trans Scam
I thought if you were leased to a company they took care of IFTA and such things?Last edited: Apr 6, 2015
