My state does not issue a "back up" photo ID. The only times were are allowed a photo ID, is when we have no driver's license. Our driver's license IS our photo ID. So one must/should check their state to see if they can even obtain such a "back up" photo ID.

By suitcase do you mean a hard sided clamshell Samsonite or something like that? If so I strongly urge you NOT to bring that. Many trainers simply won't have storage to put it, and it becomes a hazard if it flies around the cabin in a hard braking event and a major hassle for you to sleep with it in the top bunk.

For your large piece of luggage use a simple duffle bag, maybe with side pockets for organizing. It's very easy to stow. Many trainers will offer you some shelves or drawers to put your clothes and things, then you can simply fold up the duffle and it doubles as a head rest or you can put it away in a shelf. Being soft it isn't as much of a hazard if it falls down from the top bunk.

I just upgraded a trainee and he brought a backpack and a large duffle. He lived out of the duffle, keeping it with him in the top bunk when we were parked for the night. It was very easy and efficient for him to get into my truck and he was able to quickly pack up and get off my truck.

Compare THAT experience with the trainee before, with a five piece set of luggage.... what a NIGHTMARE. Took him over two hours to finally pack and get off my truck, costing me another dispatch as my 14 was running out. Be considerate of your trainer and the space available.

I don't know if anyone mentioned this or not, but I would make copies of EVERYTHING (CDL, Med Card, Passport, Credit Cards, etc.) and put it on a flash drive (or two) so if you ever need something you have it ESPECIALLY, if you are not bringing your laptop computer to TRAINING.

That being said, keep this flash drive somewhere VERY safe and maybe even technologically secure it if you know how (if that's even possible) so nobody gets a hold of it and ruins your life.

If you have a smart phone, scan and email your important documents (ID, insurance information, DOT physical) and send them to yourself and save them to your phone, or get a cloud account and store them there.

Jacked Jaw, Lepton1 and texasbbqbest Thank this.
